Interesting nerd observation; think this is the first HS album where Franz’s songwriting contributions outstrip Tad’s - four Finn/Nicolay songs, three Finn/Kubler tracks and one Finn/Kubler/Nicolay co-write (plus one Finn and one Finn/Selvidge). It definitely is. It's such a manifestation of what they (and especially Tad) have been talking a lot about lately: How the band have turned into a way more democratic artistic collective, and that they no longer compete for space. It seems like they've treated songs as songs this time around, and just chose the ones who worked out the best, and fit the album the most. I think it's mostly this. Tad is older, wiser, and perhaps able to let others' contributions in more freely now that the band's really just doing this because they enjoy each other, the scene, and what they're doing. There's less pressure on the whole operation. A small elephant in the room is that as bands get older, tempos slow down and things get a little quieter. I see it with Drive-By Truckers, too. And one could also presume that maybe Tad only had so many big, wide-screen Hold Steady riffs in his bag and finds them harder to come by now that most of his time in a given year is spent on other projects.

It's true that this is what they *say* but it's hard for me to listen to the music and not conclude that the reality is this is Craig's band now an Tad has sort of made his peace with that. For better or worse. That might be true (too), but I don't think it's the only thing that's happened. They have all grown older, and Tad seems a lot more at ease now than ten years ago. And the relationship between him and Steve - both personally and musically - are very real. Tad have spoken honestly about how the addition of Steve have taken some of the responsibility off him, especially live. And I don't think it's that weird if that feeling have bled into the way they write and record songs too. And you know, people change. Unpleasant Breakfast is a Finn/Kubler song, and I doubt that they would have made that back in the day, when Tad wrote pretty much every song. Even on Teeth Dreams (Oaks, Almost Everything) you could see signs of a different way of writing songs. I can't quite see how more songs by Steve or Franz is pointing towards Craig taking more control over the band. In what ways does that show, you think? Mostly in the fact that the last two albums have sounded exactly the same as his solo work and that they use the same producer. Again, this isn't bad. I love the last two albums.

Distortions Of Faith makes a great case for THS backing up Craig on his next solo record...

Has anyone in the UK had notification their Music Glue order has shipped? Has anyone got any further with this? 2 weeks since release date and I still haven’t heard anything. I contacted Music Glue who gave me the contact details of the people dealing with it, emailed them and heard nothing back. Music Glue said they weren’t responsible as they were just being used a host site or some such. The price of no fucking progress more like!

Was sent this earlier this week: Dear The Hold Steadyers, Apologies for the delay in your order being dispatched, and for this opening contact. There was a customs lost goods & delay on arriving in the UK and some other technical issues. All is now in hand, the CDs have arrived and we have a print date of April 16th for the tees. All orders that were for vinyl or vinyl and CD only are being dispatched this week. Any orders with a t-shirt will be dispatched next week. Again sorry for the delay. I will take this time to let you know these delays were not down to the band or management. Thank you Richard Cassar

Just loving the album, it's on constant repeat since release. Not being from the US I had to google where Perdido Key is. Right outside Pensacola. Makes sense

It's grown on me so much. Really wish I would have listened to Sideways Skull closer before the Weekender so I would have appreciated it live more.

Three weeks in, and think I’ve settled on Understudies as my musical favourite.

Have to assume the couple on the opening songs of each of the last two albums are related…
“The big one is she’s someone else’s wife”
“The ring on her finger isn’t mine”
Seeing as how they are traveling west on the new one, and they’re on a mansion on a mountaintop the former, I tend to believe they are in reverse order.

The explanation Craig gave at Rough Trade for Grand Junction was that the girl has guys buying her stuff from her Amazon wish list as gifts, which is what’s causing a rift between them. Not saying it’s necessarily the case in this song, and don’t ask me how I know this (the explanation is too mundane), but Amazon wish lists are used by sex workers, camgirls and other adult professionals in lieu of actual payment from clients. It’s a big thing in sub/dom fetish arrangements, for instance.

Took a bit of a detour to look up the reference to a Nagel poster in a silver frame (from Sixers, which I want to like but just can’t get excited about). For those lazier than me, it’s a reference to Patrick Nagel, whose work (including Duran Duran’s Rio) is about as 80s as art gets.

Damn am I happy.
I gotta say this THS record did not need any "getting used to". Some of their albums I disliked on first listen (but always eventually fell in love with--Teeth Dreams being the most stark example) but I immediately found myself wanting to re-listen to songs as soon as they finished on this record. Lyrically I feel like there is so much here to spend time on and musically I am happy to be hearing such a wide range of influences and moods. What more could I ask for than to find that as they grow older (and so do I ) they are not just re-hashing massive guitar anthems. I always prefer the sadder, darker side of THS (and lifter puller) because well they are just so good at pathos. Not sniveling woe is me depression but real emotional depth. We are so lucky to have them in this world.
