Whenever someone tells me something bad that is happening I always tell them "You gotta stay positive" some middle aged man at my work has picked it up and says it to everyone now. He has no clue he's quoting anyone.
Also when someone quotes a movie my roommate or I will say "Its like your not even trying". No one ever understands. The amusement we get out of it makes up for all of the blank stares.

I was sitting at a shady bar in my hometown, and a guy and girl sat down next to me. I remember it being just a little bit after stay positive came out. He ordered a "whiskey-coke," and almost under my breath I muttered "no ice." the guy did a huge double take, stared at me, and said, "do you listen to the hold steady?" then we talked about music for a half hour.

Ironically thats a D4 quote.

I do it when applicable, but I'm an old fart (43), and most people of that age are stuck in the past and it goes unnoticed. My son is 17 and uses them in his Facebook and Myspace posts all of the time. Nothing like bringing some good music to all the little hoodrats in his generation, or mine, for that matter. Peace

i still can't figure out what connotation the word 'hoodrat' has... the only time i've heard it outside of THS is in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, where i think it meant, er, 'woman of lose morals'
i get a little chill when the Drive By Truckers sing 'holding steady on the rightious path'. i imagine that got a huge cheer from half the crowd at the join shows

We were doing a yes-and exercise yesterday and my improv coach said, "Yeah, I mean, it really helped you to stay positive." I thought she was THS quoting, but it was just a literal comment.

i have used the phrase "you've gotta dance with who you came to the dance with" many, many a time. I used this in a very important meeting with our board of Directors. It got minuted. They all started saying it. It got me a big project to Manage. MD: "As Steve has rightly stated "You gotta dance with who you came to the dance with"" Steve: "You gotta go with what got you there" MD: "That is the sort of decision making we need in this company" Steve: "You gotta make do with what they gave to you" MD: "That's why we're putting you in charge of this project, Steve" This is hilarious!!!!!! Ha, ha, ha!! Mostly because you said absolutely NOTHING!! (congrats, btw). I met my boyfriend at a local restaurant. He was a patron sitting alone and I heard him say (in reference to a news reel he was watching), "that makes Judas look sincere!" I jumped out of my booth, smiled and we hit it off right away. The first thing out of my mouth was, "ever heard of a band called The Hold Steady?"

I love Steve's story. Transforming THS into office speak. Genius.
