Hey Unified Scene. Getting pretty quiet around here for obvious reasons. I'm sad that there won't be any "people touching people that they don't even know, yo" anytime soon. But, I just wanted to wish all of you and yours well and hoping for lots of health and safety for ALL of our friends in the scene.
Me, I'm listening to a lot more records and trying to adapt to the new normal. But, all good.
Lots of love.

Thanks Jack - good to see a post here!
It has been real quiet - though I know lots of people use other media these days (I'm Staying Stubborn on that...) I was thinking that this is a time when we could all do with a little communication, connection and community! Maybe I'm feeling it even more as I missed The Weekender this year..
I hope everyone out there is OK and managing to stay safe and well? What has everyone been doing? Anyone finding any innovative ways to stay sane?!?
Me, I've been doing all of the usual around the house and garden, eating (and drinking) more than I should, trying to start getting my head around some new tools (for me) for continuing working during this crisis (Zoom etc), listening to some music I haven't heard in years (The Dead, some old Floyd etc).
It'll soon be time to get the drums set up, I think. That'll test the neighbours' social distancing!!

Hi all, I never thought my user name would be so appropriate? Regardless I hope you are all safe and well? Hang in there wherever you may be, well come thru this stronger than ever.
What to do to pass the time? I've often.looked at my CD collection (about 500) and thought what's the point? I'll never listen to them all? So I'm now on a mission to do just that, A-Z, no skipping songs ,if I hate entire albums then put them.to.one side and give them to the local charity shop when we are released from solitary confinement, that's my plan. So far so good, still only on letter C though (Clash, Costello) it's a Labour of love, I'll get there.
Like many of you my holiday plans are up in smoke so I'm the spirit of staying positive I booked to go to.L.A. and Toronto to see our boys in September instead. Hopefully September is not unrealistic for release.
Hang in there one and all. Stay home, stay safe, love from the UK to my fellow Unified scene members wherever you may find yourself.

Hey everyone - sending love to you all.
I'm doing something a bit similar to the above, going through my record collection one by one. I'm technically working from home, and am very lucky to have a job that's not under threat right now, but a meaningless desk-job feels all-the-more meaningless when you don't even have to be at your desk anymore, and everything else outside seems so severe. I've even joined Instagram, which can't be a reflection of a healthy mind, but in my defence, so many artists have been doing 'live' concerts on there that it's been a good way to keep in touch with some music.
Usually I'd try and use the extra time to read, but I've been struggling with that. I think anything light-hearted feels a bit pointless, and anything heavy-going just feels like 'well, I don't need this right now.' That's why music has been hitting the sweet spot.

Sadly a very dear friend of mine passed away last week. 25 fucking years old. It doesn't bare thinking about. Although it's looking like it's not Corona related, the social distancing measures are making it very tough to grieve. Can't wait until our group can physically meet up to remember her. Booked my Toronto flights too - something to look forward to! In on the 14th and out on the 22nd - might do a day or two in Montreal.

I'd recommend that you make it a priority to spend some time in Montreal Mafee, I only visited once before and loved it there. If based in Toronto a day trip to Niagara falls is doable too. Fingers crossed that by September this will all be a bad dream we've awoken from. Hope to see you down the road.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Loss is always so difficult, but that age, in this circumstance, seems especially cruel and torturous. I hope you're doing as ok as is possible. Fingers crossed you get to Montreal and Toronto later in the year!

We've had to make a sudden and awkward transition to teaching classes online, which is particularly challenging since I'm doing a lab science for non-science majors this term. I ended up mailing 50-odd diffraction gratings and 22 laser pointers out to students in the course so that they could do a couple of lab-type activities at home. And now I'm spending multiple hours per day with a Zoom meeting window open on my computer, either as virtual office hours, or for one of the umpteen administrative things I need to do. Or because I'm slightly misappropriating college resources to do a Zoom cocktail hour with friends from college...
The hard part is for the kids, who are 8 and 11, and suddenly doing school online. Though from a parental standpoint, it's not a huge change in our relationship with the 11-year old who just spends all day in the bedroom with the school Chromebook. The 8-year-old, though, powers through his school work in about an hour and a half, then wanders around the house banging on stuff. He did learn to ride a bike a couple weeks ago, so that's been fun, but he's still too wobbly to be sent out on it without an adult close behind.

Strange times... the upshot personally (as one has to stay positive) is that my sons are both home, and we've been dreaming up big plans. So far, we've celebrated a 21st birthday with a barbecue, built a climbing wall, soundproofed (in an amateur way) a workshop and created from that a UV decorated DJ booth so my older son can live stream his sets on the nights when his club should be open. My business, which I've run for 16 years, is pretty much dead, and probably won't recover. I'm lucky enough that I will be able to walk away without any debts from it, so I'm looking at it as Universal advice to change my path. New adventures await. I'm really, really missing live music though, people touching people etc. Stay safe, stay positive. Ben

We had tickets to Thursday night at Brooklyn Bowl last year, the same night we attended the first three years (NYC hotels are slightly cheaper than on the weekends). My wife's anxiety is at about a 7 on a good day, and after work/family/holiday stress, she decided she needed something a little more relaxing than navigating NYC around Christmastime. We gave our tickets to a friend and took a few quiet eating & drinking days in Pittsburgh instead. When we saw that the encore that night included "Arms & Hearts", we were both disappointed... now, with so much uncertainty as to when we'll be able to see THS again, we're completely heartbroken. In April, May & June we're missing Beach Slang, Bouncing Souls, Black Flag, Queers/Bigwig, the Slackers and a few others. I miss live music more than anything else. I miss playing my dumb folk songs in tiny bars here at home for 30 people. I miss it all so much. I'm trying to stay upbeat but it's really hard. My lovely wife painted a rainbow with the words "stay positive" underneath and hung it on our front door, and I love her for that. It helps, but nothing will heal like being together with all of you again. I can't wait for that day (or evening, rather). I hope it's not as far off as I fear it is.
Stay positive, everyone.

Poorly thought out question:
Is the general in "Blackout Sam" ('The general made a gesture of contrition') the same as the main character in Epaulets ('And her jacket makes her look just like a general')?

Strange times! And it feels even stranger that this lockdown came 72 hours after arriving back in Norway after three sweaty nights in London. I'm really glad I got to do that before everything changed, still the contrast is even bigger.
I've mostly been occupied keeping the kids (3 and 4 year olds) happy. It's pretty exhausting, but it's also something I'm pretty used to. And it makes these days seem a little closer to normal. Aside from having more friends to play with, and maybe a visit from the grandparents, these past five weeks have been like an extended easter or summer break. I've often thought I would like to get locked down all by myself, getting some preace and quiet, maybe even being able to get some work done from my home office. But hearing about friends living alone, and also have a lot more of their social life happeing away from home, I'm starting to consider myself lucky.
Getting through my record collection is a bit tough under these circumstances, but I have been able to learn a couple of new songs on my guitar, and also learned the kids to sing some old favourites of my own. And I've gotten through two pretty good books about music. Meet Me In The Bathroom, which has a small appearence from Craig, and Fargo Rock City, the book who was the basis of the screenplay Craig wrote in 2009 (I don't think it ever materialised into anything). Good books about two (very different) music scenes now gone. I recommend them both.
Stay healthy, guys!

Does anyone think that the remaining shows of the year in Los Angeles,Toronto, Melbourne and Brooklyn will go ahead? Even if lockdown is lifted wouldn't there be a transitional period back to 'normal'with no theatre, sports, gigs etc.
I'm trying to Stay Positive but realistically will there shows in 2020? Not just THS but anyone? Anyone got an educated guess?

Not just THS but anyone? Anyone got an educated guess? My pessimistic best guess is that there won't be any more THS shows for 2020. Unless and until there's a vaccine or a test that provides immediate and dependable results, I don't see how large groups of people can or would congregate at concerts. Now I've started imagining THS doing the first "physical distancing" concert where they play at the outdoor summer stage at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, and we all stay 6 feet away from one another while we listen. It would be so weird that I'd love it to happen.

Even if the spread slows down, there will still be massive chances of new and big outbreaks. And getting I would think that getting a few hundred sweaty people together in a tiny room, for (in the bigger picture) something unimportant as a rock show, would be one of the last things getting back to normal.

Some positive news from Ireland - we've had 10 days of a flat curve in terms of hospital/ICU submissions - and our reproduction rate is less than 1. I still think we're a long way away from returning to normal but hopefully if this keeps up we might see a slight ease in restrictions when the current lockdown order ends - May 5th. Mainly I'm just trying to keep busy - lots of running, and I purchased some resistance bands which are a great help for home workouts. Also trying to keep off the sauce - for now

I KNOW this would end up being a terrible idea from a practical perspective, but how about when this madness ends the band has a Unified Scene boat cruise "...on the Mississippi Riverrrrr..." (sing it in your head as if it's from Stuck Between Stations for maximum effect): uproxx.com/life/mississippi-river-cruise-travel-booking-2022/

I arrived back in Aberdeen from the London shows 6 weeks ago yesterday. 6 weeks!! It seems like another world, another time way back in history (back then it was beautiful...). I had misgivings about going at the time; I had the best time and am healthy and I hope that everyone else who attended is too. I'm still not sure if it should have gone ahead and there seems to be a lot of focus on the Cheltenham Festival and the Liverpool/Atletico Madrid game which both took place a few day's later. I do know we have had little leadership in the UK (although better in Scotland) and can't see any good end to lockdown without a massive testing programme. If we get the Weekender 4 in March next year we will be blessed...
Personally, I'm quite content in lockdown (it's time for introverts to thrive!). I'm still working at the moment but the oil price isn't in my favour (although I'm increasingly uncomfortable on relying on this for my income). My family are all healthy and living right on the coast of NE Scotland is a reason to count my blessings. It's quiet, the weather has been beautiful, the air feels cleaner and nature seems to be thriving. I've been exercising more than normal and probably drinking a little too much. I've been watching and reading too much news, but trying to balance this with escapist TV (The Repair Shop is just beautiful).
Musically, I've been revisiting a lot of old music. Also, catching some of the live feeds on Facebook. Frank Turner has been very active, but my favourite has been the Wussy live shows which have been airing at midnight Friday night/Saturday morning (UK time). Chuck Cleaver and Lisa Walker's families have been isolating together so they can perform as duo. Thoroughly recommend this..
I also listened to the Saturday show from Camden 2019. I think I said on here at the time that I thought this was really focussed and fierce; listening to it confirms this as the best THS concert I've attended...
Apologies, this has been a bit of a ramble, but it's good to talk!
Stay safe everyone!!
