We got a new song, people! I think it was listed as Last Time She Talked in the setlist from Brooklyn before christmas. Now the studio version is here. I kind of like it, but it has a weird and very non-Hold Steady vibe to it. Jangly, dusty, atmospheric. Think it's gonna be great live. holdsteady.bandcamp.com/track/the-last-time-that-she-talked-to-me

Was beginning to wonder if we'd get new material before London or not!
Yeah, it's a bit of an oddball. Almost sounds as much like a CF solo track as THS, I know Josh Kaufman has produced all of these recent singles but I feel like I can hear him more on this one than some of the others. Wasn't at the Brooklyn shows, so I'm interested to hear how it hears without the horns, and more guitar-driven.
(Anyone else getting vibes of the intro to Springsteen's 'Growing Up' in the piano at roughly the 2:30 mark?)

My wife and I were in Brooklyn the night they played it. It didn't bowl us over (pun absolutely intended) but it was the first time, so we figured they were just working it out. We felt their energy was a bit off that night too but if I remember right someone said Craig was recovering from a cold. Excited to hear the recorded version though.

I’ve only listened to it 3 times but I really like it. I love the sax (very Clarence E Street) and although it’s different to anything they’ve done before it’s nice to know they’re still cutting amazing songs and pushing themselves at this stage. I agree there is a CF solo vibe to it, especially in Kaufman’s production, but with Franz back on board I wonder if his influence is also present here. Is it a Franz co-write? I never notice the songwriting credits on these new tracks! Regardless I can’t wait to hear it live in London, and also skepticatfirst’s thoughts on its place in the story.

I've been trying to find writing credits for all of the new songs for a while, and just a couple of days ago I was thinking about posting a thread to see if anyone has found it anywhere. If you google the lyrics for Entitlement Crew, the first hit (the one incorporated into Google) shows credits. But I can't seem to find it for the other tracks. Anyway, I think you are right. I think Franz has had a lot of influence one some of these new tracks, and it wouldn't surprise me if he's credited on at least five of them. That's way more than on, say, Stay Positive, where he's listed on three songs (Yeah Sapphire, Magazines, Joke About Jamaica). And yeah, I'd love to hear skepticatfirst's thoughts about this. My first impression is that this is either The Narrator or Charlemagne (sort of leaning towards the latter) describing the time before the crucifixion, and that the "she" is Mary. And I think the guy standing next to him when they "scouted the location" sounds a lot like Gideon to me. But this might be a case for the Here Goes thread.

Also, wouldn't be surprised if Steve had some writing input into these new tunes given he's been playing with the band for nearly 9 years and has only had Teeth Dreams to get stuck into!

Yeah, I'm quite sure he has. He's listed as the co-writer on 6 out of 10 Teeth Dreams tracks (Frighten, Spinners, Almost and Oaks the exceptions), and I always assumed he brought some of the more, I don't know, melodic aspects to songs like Runner's High and Wait A While. I could be terribly wrong here, but they don't seem so much like Tad. Therefore, I', also guessing he has played some part in songs like Eureka, Confusion and T-Shirt Tux too. The riffs of Stove And The Toaster and Snake In The Shower seem very Tad-like to me. Would love to see some offical credits for all of the new tracks. Please shout out if anyone finds it.

Not necessarily what I expected. But then, I've always thought that writing credits seem a bit arbitrary. Like, where's the cut off between writing your part (piano, drums, guitars) and writing "the song"? Obviously different artists will draw the line in a different place. But I wonder, too, if the same band might take a different attitude to who gets credit at different points in their careers. But to tbob's point, I could see Franz as a writing credit on Last Time She Talked - mostly because it's a bit of an oddball track - but I'd have said the for Esther, too, so who knows! Listened to it a few more times, still not sure how hot I am on it, but keeping an open mind and keen to hear it live!

www.ascap.com/repertory is an official registry. They have Esther as Craig/Franz, Entitlement and Snake as Craig/Tad/Franz. New one doesn't seem to be there.

Far as I know, credits are generally for lyrics & melody, which can seem a little unfair. If I write the lyrics and guitar for a song with Rattlesnake Gospel, then the band adds mandolin, accordion, etc., we list it as written by Rattlesnake Gospel. Most of them wouldn't be much without the band's input. Then again, we're a small time band who aren't dealing with licensing, royalties and things of that nature.

FYI: Spotify lists Craig, Tad, and Josh Kaufman as the writers of Last Time. Makes sense - this one feels a lot like the material from Craig's solo records.

One lit nerd point: the lyrics reference ‘New Sincerity’, a mini movement that was a reaction to irony in pop culture. Craig once said ‘irony is the enemy of THS’. New Sincerity is also associated with David Foster Wallace, and Craig said he read Infinite Jest twice while recording the album.
I’m not sure how that’s even possible but whatever.
