I can't believe I haven't stumbled upon this before, and I can't seem to remember it being brought up on the boards either. But I found a pretty funny blog post from The Current dating a few years back, where they have read through Craig's reviews for The Heights back in his college days. The Uncle Tupelo review is great, and the sort-of-joke about people making songs about Jeff Tweedy in the 00s was actually quite accurate. In the same archives there's also an interview with the band Sweetest Day, Craig's band in college. blog.thecurrent.org/2014/01/the-hold-steadys-craig-finn-talks-about-his-days-as-a-college-music-journalist/

“Green Day. “So this record [Kerplunk] may be a little simple, but that’s quite allright by me. What do you want, the latest rock opera by Rush/Yes/Spinal Tap about a pigeon toed computer hacker who takes it upon himself to break into the Pentagon’s computer system and take over the country in the name of rock n’ roll and black concert tee shirts?” (1992)”
This is hilarious to me, because i’m young enough to me think of Green Day as a band that writes over the top rock operas. They wrote 2 of them. One is on Broadway. And then Craig wrote rock operas. And both bands are friends. And I have a theory THS influenced American Idiot & 21st Century Breakdown ‘cause of all the religious stuff.
And I started working on a script that’s half of that plot, I literally hack into a supercomputer in the name of rock and roll and blow it up by playing the Ramones on a guitar hero controller.
“Ween. “If They Might Be Giants were full time stoners instead of full time dorks, then they might just be Ween.” (1992)”
This describes the Ween fans I know.
Craig’s also done some long form music journalism for The Guardian
