one of the absolute greats. he was still on top of his game. always wise and insightful and willing to look the devil in the face and muster a laugh. i listened to his records all day today and so many of his lyrics hit extra hard after the election. RIP.

I used to travel up and down Scotland on buses quite a lot. I'd always have to change buses at Inverness. Inverness bus station, conveniently, has the Inverness library attached (I think this should be the case for all bus stations/libraries.)
Waiting for my next bus, I'd always drop in and pick up a new book of poetry at random to read. One day I saw a book with Leonard Cohen's name on and decided to give it a chance. I was vaguely familiar with a few of his songs but didn't really know much about him. I read about fifteen poems or so, thinking, hey, this is pretty damn good. After another ten pages or so I realised I recognised some of the words I was reading - they were lyrics to a song I knew. The book was actually a mix of his poems and lyrics to his songs.
Leonard Cohen isn't quite my favourite songwriter ever (for my money, Tom Waits is the greatest of them all) but Cohen might be the only one that I could've made that mistake with. What a writer he was.

Cohen and John K Samson are the only songwriters I'd say that about
