As far as I know, he's always had that whole "romanticizing the past and wishing for a time before he was born" personality flaw, which I just can't get past I think he got that reputation more because he wrote The 59 Sound than anything he's done in his personal life. It was sort of assigned to him by rock critics when reviewing that album, which is, in a way, the opposite of this thread, but still interesting nonetheless. Do we ever dislike the person based on the music they make? (Or get a certain perception of them as a person based on their music?) As far as the blue jeans, white t shirts, and leather jacket thing goes...that's just Jersey. It's like if you took people from the 50s and plopped them in the late 80s.

I dunno, I've lived in NJ for almost my entire life and I don't see much of that at all.

Yeah that was so 70s ago. Jersey's like it's own country.

Many moons ago, I was a fan of U2 (looking back, because my crush was so I was too) We would get drunk on cheap wine, smoke cigarettes and sing along to most of Achtung Baby till the wee small hours.
We went to see them live, big stadium show, camped out from 7am to get down the front. Unfortunately PJ Harvey was supporting the day before so I had to put up with support bands I didn't like.
U2 then came out, and Bono's ego took over, didn't interact with the crowd to the point where it felt like we weren't even there. It was the Edge's birthday, the whole stadium starts singing and the band ignores the crowd and wander into the next track. 5 songs later, Bono starts mumbling Happy Birthday.........you could have heard a pin drop.
Right after that, U2 were scrubbed from the list of bands I liked and I have never gone back. All purely because Bono was a dick (I still like The Edge)

Bono's ego thing seemed to be an act to me. Like he was playing a part of some future sci-fi rock star. I know different now (or he's stuck in character for 20 years) but at the time the show blew me away. That birthday thing would piss any audience off though. Sounds awful.
