After seeing Wilco with Neil Young in December I was completely turned on to this band. Picked up kicking television and a ghost is born. I had from years ago in my collection AM, but its completely different from what this band is doing now. The only way I can describe this is if Sonic Youth and Phish had a baby. Anyone have any suggestions for additional recordings?

yhf is amazing, the documentary "i am trying to break your heart" is pretty good as an accompaniment to the record. I really liked summerteeth as well.

Agreed. YHF is an incredible album. I also really love their most recent release, Sky Blue Sky. Wilco is one of those bands where its worth picking up every record and listening in order. The way they've evolved creatively (and still managed to sound great in any style) is astounding.

My uncle once met Jeff Tweedy in a bathroom in a club.
Hmmm. That sounds really dirty. I'm going to keep it. (Apparently Jeff was taking a dump and needed TP so my uncle gave him some. I don't think I'm making this story any better.)
ANYWAY... Yankee Hotel for sure. I'd get Summerteeth right away too.

Nobody else thinks "Being There" is the best-est? I think the first disc, especially, is damn near perfect.
But then again, I'm a huge sucker for alt. country... and I find some of YHF a tad dreary depending upon my mood. Its always compelling though...
(Tweedy's solo shows are pretty great too.)
And don't forget to investigate Mermaid Ave Pts 1 & 2 if you also have an interest in Woody Guthrie and/or Billy Bragg.

Poor Places is seriously one of the best songs released this decade. Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot are about tied for me for their best record.
Terrific live band too, they sound incredible and Jeff is a pretty funny guy.

I have an eerily similar story... in '97, my dad ran into Tweedy en route to the men's room at the Will Rogers Theater in OKC. He likes to tell that story when they turn up on Letterman and places like that. Being There is important to me for sentimental reasons and is a really solid set, but Yankee Hotel Foxtrot may be the best single record they've released. Mermaid Avenue vol. 2 is really the key transitional record going into the sound they have now. Also: Greg Kot's book Learning How to Die is a good read.

apropos of nothing, i interviewed Tweedy for Time Out London before Yankee Hotel Foxtrot came out
he was very insightful but noticeably on edge the whole time, which took me by surprise
later on it was revealed that he had that prescription meds problem, which in retrospect seemed like an apt vice for so cerebral a musician (much more than booze or weed or whatever)
anyway, YHF and Summerteeth and Being There are all terrific
A Ghost Is Born too, but get the other three first (just my opinion)

I go to school at SIU Carbondale and Jeff Tweedy and Jay Farrar (Uncle Tupelo) are from Belleville IL which is not far at all from the town. So Wilco came and played a show in a parking lot on campus. I thought that was pretty awesome considering no bands ever have Carbondale on their tour schedule.

When I was in Chicago I went for lunch with a friend, afterwards she invited me to have a look around her office (which I think was new at the time). This was the view:

This is probably going to come across as near-blasphemous...but I don't really like Wilco. I've tried, I've listened to every album at least a few times (and I really did enjoy "Summerteeth" and moments of "Sky Blue Sky"), but I just...don't get it?
