Long story short... I have a guy in my band and he needs something to play so I don't end up looking/feeling like a douche.
I was trying to come up with simple things, he could do a different thing for each song, like cowbell.
Ideas?

Depending on what type of music you're going for, bass could be do-able.

Washboard. Slide whistle. Basically anything in the Country Bear Jamboree.

Auxiliary percussion is usually a safe bet--tambourine, cowbell, wood block, shakers, a drum or two, and maybe get him a glockenspiel (chimes), and go from there. He could even have little noisemakers like a police whistle or something of that nature. Once he figures out how to use everything, it'll definitely fill out the sound.

I would go with bass, the guy who I have playing with me has been playing for less than a year and he picked up on it pretty quick.

Thanks guys! I actually thought of having my friend (lead guitar) bring over his bass for it, but would have to be really simple bass. I'm liking the kazoo idea, haha! Or a really simple repeated keyboard thing.

Depends on the kind of music you're playing, sometimes simple is good. The keyboard idea seems like a good idea, but you should probably emphasize that he actually learn the instrument so that you'll have something a little more useful further down the road.

Well, we're going for kind of an alternative-rock thing. We're just some friends hanging out planning on recording around 12 songs and making a self-release CD for friends and stuff.

I don't think bass is too much of a stretch for that, but anything is going to be difficult if he doesn't have any real musical experience.

Ukelele is actually a little more difficult than advertised. I picked up a $20 uke for myself as a celebration of surviving law school, and found that the weird-ass tuning system is really frustrating if you're used to playing guitar. Scales are all fuct-up. Beyond that, chords are really easy due there only being four strings.

See if he can write lyrics, and then he can be an external member of the band...or something.
Or just get a cowbell.

Question: if this guy can't play an instrument, why is he in your band?

Question: if this guy can't play an instrument, why is he in your band? It's all over now, but I guess I'll explain it. We're desparately looking for someones house/garage to play in/record. And the drummer doesn't have enough space. And it wouldn't be able to happen for any of us in the band for various reasons. So my friend (who has a drumset but isn't nearly as good) elected us to use his house. Feeling like a douchebag for just taking advantage of him (not to mention whatever his parents would have thought) I wanted to find little excuses of things for him to do that would pass of as an "Oh, ok!"
