From kids with stickers on their boots I know some kids who didn't come back From the plywood painted black." -Two Handed Handshake
I have every other THS line pretty much figured out or least grasped on a slang/refrence/metaphor/Jesus that's just clever level but unless this is just vague filler (which I'm hoping it's not) I don't really understand it's significance. It fits with the theme of the song but is there something I'm not identifing correctly?
Side question: does the fact that when I saw THH performed live: "She's still pretty pissed about her ex's new trick" turned into "we're still pretty pissed about that beer spilling bitch" mean anything important? (Other then rallying all the agitated booze soaked crowd memebers together in empathy. Although, when I heard the alteration back when they played Boston, I laughed so hard I eventually dropped my cup so the warning was a bit ironic and self-fufiling.)
I like the live line better.

I've never really thought of that part too hard, but I just thought that: "Kids with stickers on their boots" was a reference to some clique of people, like "clever kids" or something. and "the plywood painted black" was a Rolling Stones refference.

A lot of lines become less radio-friendly when they play live.

well, true, but "bitch" isn't one of the FCC's no-no words, so i don't see why they'd feel the need to censor it.

When they played Letterman the "sucking off each other" part was censored. I don't know if that was the Letterman crew or the FCC, though. Either way, people should chill.

The FCC won't let THS be. I feel so empty without THS.

Back in the day kids would put stickers of their favorite bands or anarchistic lables on their boots. Plywood painted black to me could be hangouts/clubs/drug dens where the old window storefronts were covered with plywood and painted black. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

First Avenue/7th Street Entry in Minneapolis has a pretty cruddy looking exterior that is painted black. I doubt it's actually plywood, given the winter weather, but it does look shabby enough that it wouldn't be a huge stretch, poetic license and all.

just figured that Craig was nodding to every shitty hardcore venue that had bathroom stalls made with plywood painted black.
picks up the line about going in to get high, two at a time, etc., etc.

"Plywood painted black" could also be a cut-rate coffin or casket, that's kind of how I read it--"I know some kids who died and didn't come back." It kind of makes sense too, though reading it as punk rock clubs is probably more logical.

I took it to mean kind of a loss of innocence. The kids go "Two at a time" to the bathroom stalls made of "plywood painted black" and do some hardcore drugs. The kids that went in never came out cause they were kids no longer i.e. addiction.
Though, I am an engineer and sucked at my lit classes so I am prolly screwing up the interpretation.

Stickers on their boots - that's a hardcore punk or anarcho punk thing to do as well, isn't it? i dunno about anarcho-punk...i knew many when i was younger in denver, and the only kids i knew who would've done something like that were the younger, fashion-conscious ones, like fans of the casualties and total chaos and stuff. the serious ones didn't wear boots, and if they did, there were no stickers on them. i think the ravers in HS did that a little... maybe it was just the kids i knew.
