Some of my friends recently asked me to burn them a cd with some Hold Steady songs. If you were to burn a cd with a mixture of songs to give to someone who hasnt really heard the band before, and you want them to really get into it, what songs would you put on the cd. Should I go with complete variety (and put songs that are all really different from each other), or just one whole complete album, or all my favorites, or a few from each album? help! what would you do? what would be the perfect mix?

Here are some essentials for THS newbs; Party Pit, Stations, Banging Camp, HARRF, Sweet Payne, For Boston (if you have it), Constructive Summer, Most People Are DJs, Two Handed Handshake, Magazines.
When I make a THS mix CD, I just put the most accessible songs on it. And a couple of "talky" songs.

What Brady said. Start with the sing-along songs, work up to the stuff that really makes you think and feel.

I've made several THS mixes, and they're different everytime. Here's my most recent one:
1. Positive Jam 2. Stuck Between Stations 3. Hot Soft Light 4. Sequestered In Memphis 5. You Gotta Dance (With Who You Came To The Dance With) 6. Same Kooks 7. Banging Camp 8. Certain Songs 9. Cattle and the Creeping Things 10. Stevie Nix 11. Massive Nights 12. Joke About Jamaica 13. Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night 14. Sweet Payne 15. Stay Positive 16. Your Little Hoodrat Friend 17. First Night 18. How A Resurrection Really Feels 19. Slapped Actress
I like to put songs that reference each other back to back, hopefully eliciting a response of "Hey, didn't I just hear that?" from the listener, thus Certain Songs>Cattle, Massive>Jamaica, Sweet Payne>Stay Positive.
I also like to give the mix a sense of the overall story arc.

I've put together two Hold Steady mixes for a friend of mine. One is what I would consider "essentials," what you absolutely must know before seeing the band live:
1. The Swish 2. Barfruit Blues 3. Killer Parties 4. Modesto 5. Cattle 6. Hoodrat 7. Banging Camp 8. Resurrection 9. You Gotta Dance 10. Stations 11. Chips Ahoy 12. Party Pit 13. Southtown 14. Constructive 15. Sequestered 16. Discouraged 17. Stay Positive 18. Adderall 19. Slapped Actress
The other mix is called "Other Songs You Should Hear, But Go Out and Get the Damn Albums, Already:"
1. Positive Jam 2. Most People 3. Knuckles 4. Sweatpants 5. Stevie Nix 6. Multitude 7. Chicago 8. Hot Soft Light 9. You Can Make Him Like You 10. Massive Nights 11. Citrus 12. Status 13. Navy Sheets 14. Magazines 15. Jamaica
One friend has since bought all four albums. The other is in the process, has the two most recent. Highly effective stuff.

I've tried to get various people who swore they wouldn't like THS into them by putting their songs on a CD with other stuff, but the mainstays that I've had for the three CDs are:
Stuck Between Stations (just start the CD with it: it's all dancey and good) Chips Ahoy! (put this right afterwards then they really get a hit of it) Massive Nights (singalong) Party Pit (if only for the line 'gonna walk around and drink some more') Magazines (again, it's a really catchy song) Banging Camp (now you get into the more verbal songs) Hostile, Mass (ok, I admit it, I just plain like this song and it seems to get overlooked) Your Little Hoodrat Friend (again, plain catchy) Yeah Sapphire (it's a dirty dirty song: what's not to like?) Killer Parties (especially if you sell it to them as the song you need to listen to the morning after a night out - always put this at the end)
Also I've found it helps to make some sort of narrative (but I do that for all my mix CDs) - even if it's just drinking/partying/doing it/waking up.

That is an excellent line up. I'd probably take out Chops Ahoy! for The Swish and that would be my lot.

Nah, you definitely need Chips Ahoy in there: I wasn't a massive fan until I saw the band live and realised that it's one of the songs that EVERYONE knows and goes stupid for. The endless numbers also give people a chance to stick up their hands and just shout out crap. I've had A LOT of experience trying to get people into THS, so it's a finely-tuned list of tracks. And I've realised that Stuck Between Stations/Chips Ahoy is the complete ball-grabbing opener that makes people go 'oh ok, I'll listen to more'.

These are some songs that people who have never heard the guys seem to like. 1. Stuck Between Stations 2. You Can Make Him Like You 3. Slapped Actress 4. Lord I'm Discouraged 5. Little Hoodrat Friend
Then add some other favs to round the whole thing out. But definitely start the whole thing out with Stations.

I know a non THS fan who think that song is frikken incredible. Not to mention it's my second favorite.

The key to loving it is the bridge>solo, starting with "Slept it off in the matinee's..." I dunno why, but I love when he says "I'm getting tired of all these styrofoam coffee cups" into that wicked guitar solo. Plus, the person I made it for is a guitar player, and I wanted him to bask in the glory of the Koob! Also, I usually leave off Killer Parties. I feel like that will be the listener's reward when they inevitably seek out all their albums.

If we had to add a song to that, it'd be "Hot Fries"
