Man, this is really tough, there were so many good songs this year. I have a longlist of about 25 songs, and I'm having a very difficult time whittling it down to 10, let alone ranking them.

OK, after much deliberation, I've come up with a list. However, I cheated, and made a top 20, because, well, because I can, so ha! If it bothers you that much, you can just ignore songs 11-20.
With the exception of one artist, I limited myself to one song per artist, thus the absence of several THS songs as well as some other favorites from artists on the list. So, without further ado...
Honorable mention (yeah, I'm reaaaally cheating here): Elvis Costello & The Imposters - No Hiding Place, Jay Reatard - See Saw, My Morning Jacket - I'm Amazed
20. David Byrne & Brian Eno – Strange Overtones 19. Vampire Weekend – Walcott 18. Wye Oak – Please Concrete 17. No Age - Eraser 16. Ponytail – Celebrate The Body Electric (It Came From An Angel) 15. Conor Oberst - Cape Canaveral 14. Deerhunter – Nothing Ever Happened 13. Jenny Lewis – Acid Tongue 12. MGMT - Kids 11. The Death Set – Negative Thinking 10. The War On Drugs – Arms Like Boulders 9. She & Him – Why Do You Let Me Stay Here? 8. Fucked Up - Son The Father 7. The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound 6. TV On The Radio – Dancing Choose 5. Tom Gabel - Anna Is A Stool Pigeon 4. Fleet Foxes - Blue Ridge Mountains 3. TV On The Radio - Crying 2. Titus Andronicus - Upon Viewing Brueghel's "Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus" 1. The Hold Steady - Slapped Actress
The top 3 are somewhat interchangeable, as I had them each in the number one spot at one point or another, but in the end, our boys prevailed!

That is why I presumed it was a crime. Is it people hating the fact that they are young, rich, and beautiful?

How the fuck is Vampire Weekend a crime? seriously, the Vampire Weekend record is really good. i dont really understand all of the hate of this band. Because it's a mediocre at best record, and they're preppy yuppie douchebags. Listen to Born Ruffians if you wanna hear the same thing but 150x better.

I'm not a huge fan of Vampire Weekend, I don't mind a couple songs. But I really think it's hysterical the amount of hate and disgust they get when their name is mentioned. It kinda makes me like them even more.

To be honest, I have never heard anyone hating Vampire Weekend...
But I've heard of tons of people who don't know who they are.

That is a very solid list. I was so pissed off when I missed seeing The Copyrights.
The only album this year that people have been raving over that really pisses me off is Glasvegas.

On the punknews end of the year lists they were grossly overlooked (The Copyrights, that is), along with Shorebirds, and The Riot Before. I felt an obligation to put them on considering that record was absolutely flawless.

They've made four great albums in a row. With every one I get it and think, this is pretty good, then I listen to it some more, and decide that's better than pretty good, and might just be their best yet.

So far I've only gotten Learn the Hard way and Mutiny Pop, and I've been told those are similar in sound, while the other ones are a little more poppier (like, they switch every other record). I'm almost always in the mood for Learn the Hard way though, so that's a good sign.
