Hi there folks, For those unaware Manchester's Night & Day Cafe, a staple of our live music scene for a couple of decades now has been put under threat of closure by someone who purcahsed property right near the city centre gig venue and then COMPLAINED ABOUT THE NOISE. Yep, you read that right. Countless bands have passed through it's doors over the years, it's even been namechecked on "Lost" and there's a petition to help save it. If anyone who reads this could help a fellow THS fanatic out it'd be awesome! www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/manchester-city-council-to-remove-our-statutory-nuisance-abatement-notice#Alex

It's been there for like 25 years.
What puzzles me is that there are at least six loud venues within touching distance. Whoever moved there didn't do their research. Sell up and kindly fuck off.
Night & Day is a Manchester staple. It's not as en vogue for the hipsters as the others on Oldham Street at the moment though.

It's nowhere near that simple. I spoke on the phone to the complainant the other day. Who is actually a former venue manager. They moved in and had no problems for months – then in October the volume suddenly increased dramatically. Only after a long period of sustained and increased volume was the noise abatement complaint issued. At which point the volume decreased again. Until, as I understand it, last weekend - after the petition was launched and an outpouring of support for Night and Day had come - at which point the volume increased again. It's not just the newcomers who have complained; longtime residents have, too.
But, you know, don't let that stop you telling people you've never met and know nothing about to fuck off, eh?

Oh, for fuck's sake. My mistake. Thought I was on fairly safe ground expressing my swearing based frustration with this whole thing. It's not just Night & Day this happens to, there's fucking loads of venues this happens to regularly. I don't want to be on the side of the venue or against the complainant here, but the mostly blameless gig-goers and bands who need it to exist.
I'm assuming Night & Day didn't engage with polite requests and this is a last ditch measure? Seems a bit extreme otherwise.
It's always more complicated. Tell your friend I apologise.

i'm really not trying to be snarky here, i'm just trying to understand -- how does a live music venue's overall volume just increase and decrease like that? did they historically book quieter bands and now it's heavier music more often? did they upgrade their sound system? it seems really strange to me that a venue that's been in business for that long would have a sudden, inexplicable increase in volume that could then decrease after a complaint was made. i don't think the overall sound/volume of live music has changed very much in the last couple decades, so something must've changed. i don't understand, and i'd like to.
