They're geeking out over on the guitar thread.
So.....does anyone know what Bobby's set-up is??
I know he plays C&C Custom Drums (and Paiste cymbals?), but I was wondering about sizes / types of cymbals etc.
Anyone?

I'm pretty sure he uses 2002's, 15" Hats, 24" Ride, 20" Crash on the right side. He had a Zildjian up on the left side in Brooklyn.

I thought he had huge-sounding hats.
Intrigued to know what the Zildjian might have been!
I do like my Zildjians - could never get on with Paiste cymbals myself.

Does anyone know what size sticks Bobby uses? They look like a 2B or something similar.
Yeah that's really all I got.

I believe you're right. 2B American Classics. Think it's Vic Firth.

I believe you're right. 2B American Classics. Think it's Vic Firth. It might be just that I've used 5's my whole life but I can't imagine being able to pull off rolls with a 2. I used 5A for many years and recently switched to a 5B because I was dropping sticks like crazy (felt like a real rookie...), and I noticed a big lack of dexterity, so a 2...I don't know.

Well, here's a story from my experience. I was having some issues when my band adapted from being basically an alt-country outfit to a straighter indie rock band insofar as I was playing 5As predominantly - a hangover from my days in a Who-esque shambolic four-piece that required a lot of improv/fills etc, where I'd think destroying my kit in a pub was a smart thing to do. To be fair, my first kit is built like a tank - being a 1982 Pearl Forum, made out of some idiotic fibreglass/Wood mix thing. That ones a 12x12/16x16/22x20.
I changed to a 2B when another drummer (possibly Bobby actually, although it could also have been Walter Trout's tour drummer) told me it improved their timing. I used Vater 2Bs for years until maybe two years ago when I switched down to Vater Chad Smith signatures, which aren't as heavy and have a wider shoulder, as I'm all about the getting the rim on each hit. Recently I've been flat broke so I've been picking up whatever sticks I can afford before stretches of gigs - at the moment I have a pair of Vater 5Bs which feel like balsa wood in comparison.
I can safely say the years of heavy gigging with 2Bs have made me faster and improved my timing - they took a little getting used to, but they also helped me flatten out my style a bit. As Bobby is a massive influence on my more recent playing, I've been trying to get down his combination of rock solid groove and spaced, clever fills.
I now play a handbuilt in the UK Premier Gen-X Hybrid, 12, 14, 22 with a Tama Statclassic Bubinga 14x6.5 snare. I have two other in storage. Info to follow!

Yeah the other two are a PDP LX series (22"/12"/14") which I've never actually seen because it's in Brooklyn somewhere in a lock-up and a gold EMI Hamma (Premier made) - (12"/13"/16"/22x18").
Cymbals-wise I was fortunate enough to get hooked up with some spare Paiste Signatures from Iron Maiden (!) - but I only use one, they're too bright sometimes. 17" Paiste Signature Full Crash, 19" Dream Bliss Crash/Ride, 22" Dream Bliss Ride, 14" Paiste 2002 Heavy Hi-hats. I recorded with a pair of 15" Paiste 2002 Sound Edge hats recently, which were frankly awesome so I'm on the lookout for some. I play Dream as basically to me they're cheaper but they sound like Zildjian Ks, which are prohibitively expensive - I know people say this all the time about other cymbals but these Dream ones are genuinely the real deal, they sound amazing both recorded and live, with a really dark musical wash. They match well with the brighter Paiste cymbals in my set-up too. Totally recommend them

I've heard great things about Dream, definitely on my list to try out next time I'm the market.
Stick wise I'm usually playing Zildjian's Taylor Hawkins signature model, which is a slightly longer 5B.
And, to get myself fully caught up, isn't Bobby back to using a Ludwig set now?

What my new snare shell should look like (sample pic)
Bubinga veneer over 13" x 7" birch shell.
Will have a poly / gloss finish.
Built by Alan Tocknell of Tee Drums in Stroud.
Will be drilled for 16 nice, small lugs and fitted with a Dunnett strainer / butt.
Will probably go for pressed (triple-flanged) hoops rather than die-cast.

Ordered some parts for my new snare his weekend.
Decided to go with a Trick throw rather than a Dunnett.
Ordered from ebay - when I checked later on where the shop was, found it's just outside Minneapolis.
Such little things make me happy.
Ed: Trick strainer arrived today ......SHINY!
Just waiting on my new shell and last of the parts now (pics to follow)

Ever since the jam session I've been hankering for a huge ride cymbal. Got a standard 20" Sabian, but the one Bobby had was a 24" Paiste and it sounded unreal. Thinking a Zildjian 23" Sweet Ride is going to be the way to go.

Never really played a huge ride, so I'd be curious.
Had so many over the years, from big clangy Zildjian Z / K Customs, to a Paiste 2002 Heavy and a lovely 18" UFIP.
Would love to pick up a nice 18" / 20" Zanki, Tosco or Vibra. Not that need it!!
My favourite ever was a lovely 20" Zildjian Deep Ride (old model), which I stupidly sold when changing to play heavier music. I wish I still had it....
My current K Heavy Ride is the closest I've found - a lovely low-pitched ping, with not too much wash.
Thought you played Zildjians, Alex?

Used to (hence the Zildjians on the old kit) but I sold everything except my 80's Ludwig Rocker snare when I moved to Canada for a year. Upon returning I bought the Tama kit and a pack of Sabian XS20's which'll get changed out over the next year or so.

Cool.
Any thoughts on what your new cymbals are going to be?

RIP Clyde Stubblefield
If you haven't heard of him, please just Google / YouTube search "Funky Drummer"
Hip-hop / R'n'B / rap / pop wouldn't sound the same without this track and this drummer.
