i was going to make a thread about how awesome the new neil on impression album is, but then i realised that a thread about how awesome the new neil on impression album is would probably sink without a trace here, so i'm incorporating that into a wider-reaching thread about how great it is when bands don't have some attention-seeking clown spoiling their songs with his/her stupid voice. anyway, this new neil on impression album is really the shit. it's on double-LP with a gorgeous gatefold cover, but if you want the vinyl version you should get on that now because there's only been 500 pressed. it's a beautiful item: you can hear bits here: www.denovali.com/neilonimpression/to be honest, lately i've been finding a lot of instrumental rock to be too formulaic and meandering, but this band always floors me. this is their third album, and both the other two are pretty special as well. they're italian, with diy punk pedigree, and they play sweeping, cinematic post-rock with deep, insistent grooves. it's their most ambitious record yet - more restrained and expressive than the previous one, 'the perfect tango', and not so piano-led this time around (although the piano playing is still a highlight). if i was to compare it to anything, i'd say it's kind of like the most recent jaga jazzist album, only more propulsive. apparently they'll be touring tiny venues in the uk with raein fairly soon, which should be completely spectacular. is anybody else here into much instrumental stuff? godspeed you black emperor!? do make say think? oxes? the fucking champs? yndi halda? souvaris? explosions in the sky? the octopus project? the dirty three? a hawk and a hacksaw? the dragon rapide? stafraenn hakon? i bloody love it, me.

I don’t really listen to a lot of instrumental stuff, but Mogwai is pretty sweet. Explosions in the Sky also have their moments. I have tried with Godspeed but I just cant get too into it.

I usually get bored with instrumental music, because I love singing along so goddamned much.
Exceptions: GY!BE obviously, oh my god Dirty Three, yes yes yes Explosions, Do Make Say Think all right, and Pele, who were a Milwaukee band that went mostly unnoticed until the tail end of their existence. Tristeza, Rachel's, and Labradford are also completely wonderful.

i have to throw in the Bakerton Group....the instrumental work of the members of Clutch. sort of a funky, blues, jazz, stoner rock mix.....

Oxes are fucking awesome. Ridiculous shit. My most recent instrumental discovery is the Andreas Kapsalis Trio. Visionary acoustic guitarist with two gifted percussionists, and you'd swear there were at least six or seven guys performing. www.myspace.com/aktrio

Start your Dirty Three explorations with Ocean Songs
Another cool mostly instrumental band is The Mercury Program.
Sea and Cake, Do Make Say Think, Don Caballero, and Pell Mell all rock my world almost completely without words

yup, i'd say 'ocean songs' too. 'whatever you love, you are' and 'she has no strings apollo' are just as good though. don caballero are pretty sweet, and all those bands steph mentioned that i didn't. and upsilon acrux, and del rey, and rhys chatham, and physics, and stars of the lid, and raccoo-oo-oon, and kling klang. there's been some really cool stuff from leeds in the past few years, too: www.myspace.com/dragonrapidewww.myspace.com/deathhandapproachingwww.myspace.com/thesemonsterswww.myspace.com/the7hertzbandwww.myspace.com/monsterkilledbylaser

I like a bit of surf but that's really it for me when it comes to instrumental stuff. Though I've got a Removal album of punk/metal instrumental music that's pretty good.

where's a good place to start with the dirty three? Thirding Ocean Songs and adding a vote for Horse Stories. "Sue's Last Ride" is epic (and there's even a song called "Red"). How could I have forgotten Stars of the Lid?! The first time I took Vicodin, I put on Avec Laudenum and totally blissed out. Wonderful. Would also like to give props to my friend Erik's project: Casino Versus Japan. The voice talking in this song is me at age 17, rambling into a handheld tape recorder while I was waiting for doors to open for a Pedro the Lion show around the corner at the Miramar Theatre. EK just handed me the tape recorder and asked me what I thought of when I thought about Hawaii (I've never been). Man, talk about a vivid memory.

Not entirely instrumental but Bardo Pond and their 50 or 60 offshoots are among my all time favorite bands in any genre. Ditto Mogwai.

Every now and again I listen to Tera Melos or By the End of Tonight, both of which are really good studying music.

Love the instrumental stuff Mogwai, Godspeed, Explosions in the Sky, Dirty 3 (Yep "Horse Stories" is where to start), other good ones are Einstellung from the UK, Because Of Ghosts & Laura from Australia & Mono from Japan
How about Booker T & the MGs
Also all the Krautrock stuff Neu, Kraftwerk, Can, Tangarine Dream etc, but that probably another topic...

i thought you'd like them! if you ever have a chance to see them live, you HAVE to. they don't seem to be playing much nowadays, though, what with warren ellis working with nick cave most of the time.
