Hadn't listened to this record much in quite some time-
Came up in the mix tonight.
Ginger and jack and four or five feminax
Man, just the gritty, dirty, simple, demo-esque rawness of this record still fucking slays me.
some nights we almost froze but we rubbed up pretty close with some rock and roll promoters; stayed up pretty late with some rock and roll performers
Only recently I read that AKM is actually two recording sessions- both just about five demos each.
But just such a dirty, honest and representative record.
Just wanted to dedicate a full fucking thread to a truly standout record in this bands archives.
I always dreamed about a unified scene

YES YES YES!!! now why doesn't anyone listen to me when i tell them this? i fucking love this record (as i do with all the albums, let's be honest). there is something so instaneously cool about it which makes it special. it's got something that's for sure. i am gonna put it on in a mo. just to celebrate its wonders!

Good call, guys! It's an excellent album. I was hooked the first time I heard it, when the sound kicks in halfway through Positive Jam. What a way to start an album.

Had to learn to love it, but it is really fucking amazing. Sweet Payne gets better with every listen. Such a tight album. And the b-sides are incredible as well.

In March of 2005 a buddy of mine asked me to come to the Twin Cities for a weekend of Guiness and some bourbon too. He said there was this band playing at the Triple Rock that he had seen before, and that they had some killer riffs, and interesting verbage. She came on kinda spicy but she tasted like those pickle chips! fuck yes "swizzelsticks" when it came to the part when "She said its good to see you back in a bar band baby" ,well the place went fucking nuts and CF fed off of the crowd like no one else I had ever seen.
It was on. I had that fucking CD in my car for a year. I didn't listen to anything else, except Separation Sunday, which would be another thread.

I don't get people who like this band and don't think this record is amazing.

That line , that one line: Its great to see ya back in a barband baby. Its great to see youre still in the bars. Taht to me is all of it. The whole thing wrapped up nicely in one little gum and lint and washed up ticket, and xanax, and rolling paper, and phone number and coughdrop little ball.

They brought me back, before then I was disgusted with music in general.

If everyone "Got" The Hold Steady then they wouldn't be all that meaningful to all of us that do get them. More like relate to them for some reason. Its weird but I feel like THS are old friends that were maybe a wingman for me some crazy night. Like your best friend that finishes or fills in the gaps of the story about that ONE night back when you know.

i think it's a case of, to me, if you like the band then you should really like this record. but then i suppose it depends how you view the band and when you got into them. i got into them around BAGIA but i still really, really love this record. it's the grittier version of what we've got now and it's exciting. each record means something different to me and almost killed me means dirty, raw rock 'n' roll with huge heart and intelligence.
...and it still throws up surprises after the millionth listen, which is important.

One the nurses I work with made an offer on a house on Payne. It's not the same part of Payne, but I really hope he gets it.

I don't get people who like this band and don't think this record is amazing. i can't agree more. and that goes for ss, too. the first two are head and shoulders above the next ones (which i do love dearly).

Most People are DJ's, the Swish, Certain Songs & ya gotta finish a record strong & Killer Parties is a ripper.
A great album probably not quite as good as SS but a clear number 2

BAGIA hooked me instantly, but I didn't really fall head-over-heels for this band until I heard Almost Killed Me. To be honest, I didn't love most of Separation Sunday until my show. There's just something about this album that's just gripping, edge-of-your-seat style.

she only pays attention to the prices of cigarettes. She says she hopes they get cheaper that song does NOT get enough attention. those lyrics are just incredible but kids always say it's boring. pfffft. no. it's genius.
