it is the eve of the tour franz arrives in charlottesville around 11pm. i greet him with an offer of my freshly baked homemade lasagna prepared with ground beef, veal and pork. franz informs me he is a vegetarian. opps. solved with mac & cheese and coronas.
he plays jason isbell on my ipod then noted he had sketched up a cover of “goddamn lonely love” but did not know all the words. i print out the lyric sheet, he writes in the chords and breaks out the banjo. it ends up on the setlist (and i appreciated it fn!).
up early the next morning for the wnrn radio appearance. in the afternoon, another live radio interview, this one more interesting … a sports radio talk show. franz is a natural.
off to the venue for soundcheck @ 5:30. the pa system fails to put out in one of the two main speakers, then fails in both. andy waldeck and i rewire the whole thing for 90 minutes (truthfully, i just held the flashlight and stressed). problem solved. andy is a hero.
venue fills up with a nice, sizable crowd. franz delivers an entertaining show with songs, stories, laughs and dance moves. polly plays motorben and sells some merch then we load out.
on to another bar where franz makes the mistake of mentioning he has never sung karaoke before. patron on me for liquid courage and he sings "fairytale of new york" to the delight of those still remaining at 2am. late night coffee and charades at a local diner after that. day 1 of the tour seems to be a success.
