Sometimes when I'm bored I like to check songs for navigational accuracy. Today, I checked "Southtown Girls," and it holds up pretty well - or least it did when it was written. At that time, it was possible to take Penn Ave up to the Northside, and then take Lowry east to the quarry. But that required crossing the Lowry Avenue Bridge. The bridge was demolished in 2009 and is currently being rebuilt. It's scheduled for re-opening until summer 2012.
Until then, the drug dealers in "Southtown Girls" will be giving poor Bloomington some bad directions.
By the way, "Wagon Wheel" by Old Crow Medicine Show has some of the worst navigational references of all time. The did not use Google Maps when writing that song.

That is fucking glorious. It is the most incredibly pointless waste of time I've ever seen, and I've just spent an hour on Google Streetview, visiting Hold Steady songs. If that was you, I salute you. If it was someone else, then go salute 'em for me.
