I have to say Trompe Le Monde has always felt like 'my' Pixies album for me as it's the only one I heard around the time of it's release. When they were still a going concern *albeit only just*. I get what Hostile Matt is saying about production in retrospect but at the time of Trompe I was listening to a lot of Fugazi and Sugar and it fitted right in with the sounds of the era.
I dig the record. But I dig all of their records. I had HEY from the BBC album come on in my car on the way home tonight. Made everything OK.

I got into the Pixies 3 or 4 years ago after my Dad's friend burnt me a copy of Doolittle. I then went onto explore the back catalogue. So I got into all of their albums at the same time, so when listening I was comparing the sound of each. The first 3 are very similar, but I though that TLM strayed away from the sound which they created on the first 3. But they obviously wanted to do something new, but it just wasn't for me.

For me, all of the Pixies studio albums hang together nicely as a whole. People diss Trompe for being too harsh and metallic, but they should have another listen to Motorway to Roswell - there's plenty of subtlety there.
While we're on the subject of "underrated", I feel that some of Charles's post-Pixies output hasn't had the attention it merits. Pistolero and Frank Black and the Catholics are two LPs that are definitely worth tracking down. Quite Hold Steady-like, dare I say it...

It's thought of as a weak album because Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa sounded so completely new when we first heard them. But the novelty wore off. I appreciate that if you're coming to the records a long while later, then the novelty effect doesn't matter, so you're judging them in a different way. But in this case Rock History has been written by the people who were there at the time. It'll be interesting to see if the accepted hierachy of Pixies albums has changed in 20 years, when the people writing the books and editing the magazines are no longer the people who heard the first two records as teenagers.

I'm actually old enough to have been a teenager when I first heard Come On, Pilgrim, so I guess I'm the exception that proves your rule!
For what it's worth, my order of preference is: 1 Doolittle. 2 Trompe Le Monde. 3 Come On, Pilgrim. 4 Surfer Rosa. 5 Bossanova.
It'd be a boring old world if everyone liked exactly the same thing, let's face it.

Which brings us back to the subject of Koob's internal organs - a nicely circular thread with excellent digressions.

the best one was when manny went in the piano. or maybe the one with the other book shop! and simon pegg tries to shave off manny's hair! and he shows the picture of him without it and no beard! man... that was brilliant
