Fun night at the Empty Bottle. Met up with some old friends, chatted it up with fn for a bit and ran into Selby, misterselby, Addy, her friend Victoria, a brief joelle sighting, and of course, the one, the only STEPHANIE. The songs are muscular and lend themselves well to the intimate live setting. Nice choice of Zevon and Durante covers. All very cool. Very nice to catch up and hang out with new and old scene members. Met a lurker and hopefully board convert named Mike. (Reppin' the THS Twins shirt! Nice. ) The gig crowd was respectable, the openers were commendable, and of course the tunes were great. gallery.me.com/brendanhilliard#100412My camera broke, so anything I have was before that. Lots of silliness. Time to get that fixed. I gotta sleep. Setlist: There Will Be Violins For My Next Trick I'll Need A Volunteer (Warren Zevon) Dead Sailors Jeff Penalty Hey Dad! Cease-Fire, or Mrs. Norman Maine Confessions of an Ineffective Casanova X-Games World Inferno vs. The End of the Evening Trains (World Inferno Friendship Society) Hi-Lili Hi-Lo (Jimmy Durante)

a white tux? whatever it is; niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice threads, franz! Exactly what it was. Made a joke about wanting to bleach it whiter. It's his new "tour suit."

Big thumbs up for the Empty Bottle. Nice, cozy, bullshit-free venue. Kinda reminded me of my beloved Triple Rock, but with fewer punk points and more of a lowbrow hipster vibe.

It was so, so fabulous. The kind of show and bar I love to be at. Knowing tons of people, and everything casual, and CHEAP BEER -- Hoegaarten on tap for $4??? Seriously, I have paid $6 for a half pint before.
Franz was surprisingly entertaining, I was prepared to not enjoy this. But -- the Jeff Penalty song was really, really a good one. I think I'll have to get that one.
I usually hate having my picture taken, and hate taking pictures, but I took a ton (yes, some to come) and perhaps the cutest picture in the world of me and Brendan was taken here.
I was seriously at the height of my powers at this show. Okay, not my total height of powers, as I was not at a Home Field Advantage venue, but it was great.
And STEPHANIE! An absolute treat. Steph and I got Franz to get some photobooth pics with us, and they are so cute!
Addy was there -- a treat to meet her! And the lurker Brendan mentioned.... funny! And there was a heck of a lot of chatter about the MIA Broadway... but, Broadway came through with some well-timed emails and sent his regards through the internets!
And a big pile of Brendan's other friends.
And Joelle, slinking around!
Brendan and Kim were The Cutest Thing Ever and I laughed the entire train ride home with them.

So, so great to see you all. I wish Unified Scene folks were at every show I went to, forever. Franz was a charming and all-around fantastic showman, as always, and getting to chat briefly with the one and only Elizabeth Elmore made my night extra-wonderful. If I'd have had more than $10, toll fare, ticket and gas money to my name, you'd all have had many more rounds of drinks than you already did.
Sorry for not raging and then bailing out kinda early -- didn't get back to MKE until after 3, as it was. I started yawning around 11:30; staying out that late is pretty heroically unusual in my book.
Everyone who didn't make it was dearly missed, most especially Broadway...

MrSelby, you made me laugh out loud with this reference. I'm glad I'm not alone on WWI Inciting Incidents for $1000, Alex. And for the rest of the board, I always was amazed at the story of the assasination of Franz Ferdinand. There was a failed bombing attempt earlier in the day and the Serbian nationalist assasins all scattered. Princip was drinking in a bar, bummed out that their plan had failed. He just happens to look out the door and there is Franz Ferdinand sitting in a car at a stop sign. Princip runs outside and shoots him, starting WWI. That's some crazy stuff...

Hi, all~ Getting back to the grind from my Chicago trip and seeing Franz's show. I had never seen Franz live so, this was quite the treat. Seriously, he is a one man band.
The venue was small, a hole in the wall, corner dive. It had brick walls inside and was very dimly lit. It very much reminded me of a small place here in Orlando that expired in 2000 called the Go Lounge. It was smoky, and sexy, and intimate - just like this place! It was perfect size for the crowd that showed. And Selbyandgriggs is right - very cheap beer!!
I am used to seeing Franz in a certain kind of light: with THS, he's exuberant, jumps all over the place - practically out of his skin, and pounds his keyboard as if he's beating his stepchild! Franz as a solo act is quite different: he's reverent, somewhat bashful, humble, self deprecating and very smooth.
The performance was seamless as he weaved large tales from one song to the next with lots of funny tidbits in between. As a performer, he's soulful. He does these funny little foot moves that are absolutely loveable!!! Ha, ha! If I had toted a better camera w/me, I'd have taken nice shots, but alas...pics from my digi cam will have to do (as soon as I upload them). Anyhoo, back to the performance, he admitted to debuting a new suit! (But I have to insist on him adding sequins or at very least some glitter.). The suit was quite....er, um the pants in particular, were.....tight, heh. Franz is a seriously talented performer. He played banjo as well as he played guitar and his beloved accordian. He touched the keys to the accordian with no shame as if he were fondling the love of his life. His songs emulate the undulations of a tattered heart and it pours out from each pore of his body.
I was very proud to be there to support him. Sorry he could not hang out but understood he was exhausted from traveling. I did get to chat w/him beforehand for a few minutes, which of course, made the night ultra special. Gave him a big hug after the show and told him I was extremely proud of him.
I brought a friend to the show. She not only loved the performance, she bought his CD. She was a total convert by the end of the night.
It was great seeing Brendan + GF, meeting Mr. and Mrs. Griggs, Stephanie, Mr and Mrs Joelle and a couple others whose names I've forgotten (mea culpa)! Sorry there aren't any post show shenanigans to impart, but it was late, we were all tired....not to mention it was flippin' COLD!!! :-) A good time had by all, nonetheless.
I'll post pics tomorrow!

Well, I did post them on FB so, here goes nothing.
Don't hurt me if it doesn't work....

There are actually twice as many photos of Franz, but these are the better ones.

If you want more detailed instructions on making the photos appear on your post:
To post a picture, you'll need the precise URL or website address for your photo itself (usually it will end with ".jpg" or ".gif" or similar indicator that it is a photo). Usually you can get that by going to the website where the photo appears, right-clicking on the image and choosing "view image" or "copy image location". If you choose view image, you will open a window with the precise url of the picture. copy the url. in your post, where you want the picture to appear, paste the full url, highlight it, and click the tag button that has a mini picture on it (bottom row, 4th from the left). or just insert the following codes around the url (in square brackets instead of the ones i have used):
{img}yoururlhere.jpg{/img}
