Hello,USers and everyone else...
this is my first post on the new board and indeed my first since i got off the Rock-n-Roll Means Well merry-go-round.had a great time and i'm sure that everything that can be said about that awesome tour has already long since been said so i'll refrain from rehashing and revisioning.
since right around the time that tour started my family's financial situation has,to put it mildly, disintegrated.my baby mama is the main breadwinner in our household and i am the primary caregiver to our children.since her profession is largely commission based we have been struggling a great deal.i'm sure more than a few of you can relate.so i haven't posted much because a)trying to keep body and soul together and take care of my babies has consumed most of my time and b)because of the aforementioned trials i've been pretty gloomy and i'm not the kind of guy who spreads bad vibes around when i'm bumming.so there you have it.on to the topic...
i may have missed this thread so if i'm rehashing i apologize:
Lord,I'm Discouraged is also the title of a song by the great(probably THE GREATEST)Delta bluesman,Charlie Patton.Craig's song shares only a title with this one and i am posting on this topic to ask if anyone knows from reading or by talking to Craig if he knows the song or if this is all a massive coincidence.a third possibility i suppose is that he once saw the title but never actually heard the song and thus merely took inspiration from the title and/or the syntax thereof.I've never pegged anyone in THS as a particular lover of pre WWII blues but it wouldn't be totally shocking if one or more of the guys was.certainly their music bears few if any hallmarks of what musicologists refer to as 'the primitive blues'.
i'd recommend Charlie Patton to anyone here who isn't familiar with him.most if not all of his master recordings no longer exist so his CDs come from the survivng 78s and are therefore of very poor sonic quality.despite that, his known recordings are without doubt among the most important of the 20th century.his music lies at the bedrock of what we call Rock-n-Roll.Robert Johnson, who is much better known learned a lot from him and as such it is not a stretch to say that none of the music we all love would be possible without him,at the very least from the standpoint of lineage.furthermore,as a performer he was years ahead of his time.legend has it that his voice could be heard from a distance of 400 yards without the benefit of amplification.what is NOT legend is that he played his guitar behind his back, with his teeth, simulated coitus with it and rapped, all decades before such things were done by figures who are now icons of popular culture.
also,i'd like to say that Kubler's solo on their 'Lord' gets my vote for
Guitar Solo of the Year.a wonderfully indulgent and rippin' run on the fretboard it is.
finally, just wanted to let everyone know that i will be doing St. Louis and Iowa City in April with my usual partners in Rock.hope to see some of you out on that run.i'd like to do more than just two shows but coming from the Dairy State(that's WISCONSIN,not California no matter what you fuckers out West claim)the tour couldn't possibly be routed or dated worse.we'll see about more but right now i'm only committing to those two.
more later,much love to all.
