I like horse racing although I’m not a big punter.
But, in Melbourne, on 26th December, there are two great sporting days. One is the cricket at the ‘G’. The other is the racing at Caulfield. Hey, either is a constructive summer’s day (if you will)!
Yesterday I went to the track.
When I say that I’m not a big punter, it doesn’t mean that I don’t love poring over the form in some attempt at quasi-intellectualism. There is, of course, one exception – I am morally obliged to bet on the 5th horse in the 6th race! You know why.
Now, Caulfield on 26th December is also a place for plentiful drinking. And, it happens that the quietest bar is the one ‘out the back’ near to the horses stables...and parade ring. So that is where I took myself for a quiet brew out of the glare of ‘mate – it’s been so long’s’.
As I stood there (and this is about 2 hours before the 6th race) I saw one horse that took my eye. Actually, the young female strapper took my eye, but the horse was attractive, too (if you get my drift...)!
So – I struck up a conversation (yeah – I’m bold enough to call it that) with that strapper as she took her horse around that parade ring. Obviously, such a conversation has significant intervals. Horse approaches ‘hi’; ‘hi’...horse goes past and approaches again a minute later. ‘How are you?’ ‘Good, you?’... Horse goes past and approaches again a minute later. ‘Nice horse;’ ‘yeah, he’s going great.’ Horse goes past and approaches again a minute later. ‘So what’s his name?’ ‘Her name is Orbit Express.’
By that stage I was a little over the whole experience (not to mention a little dizzy). I walked off.
So the 6th race approached and I looked at my form guide – it is generally a good idea to tell the bookies the name of the horse you want to bet on! And the 5th horse in the 6th race was...none other than Orbit Express.
What an omen!
So, I raced off to the one bookie I know. I’m neither foolhardy nor wealthy enough to have $900 on the 5th horse in the 6th race (on an omen); so it was $19 each way. And the bookie I know gave me decent odds because Orbit Express was a bit of a roughie.
Poor horse...got boxed in all the way. When she got out she flew. Possibly the most brilliant second you’ve ever seen. And, as a result, I got back $82 for my $38 outlay. For those as mathematically challenged a same, that is a $44 profit.
The same as the price of tickets for the Corner Hotel show on 2nd February!
Nice...
