so i was bored on x-mas eve and happened across this movie on-demand that came out the year i was born. it looked cool, so i watched it.
so i've asked around, and the fact that seemingly everyone but me had seen it long ago makes me feel no-so-with-it.
the fact that i had no idea this is where a neat little THS reference came from makes me feel dumb.
the fact that it took me until halfway through the movie to connect the song and the movie made me feel even worse.
can someone please make me feel better and also admit they had/have no idea who the cutters were?
thx in advance.

I saw the movie the year it came out.
I have not seen it since.
What is the connection?

yes. i do feel better.
in the movie, the cutters were the townie kids in bloomington, indiana (dennis quaid, daniel stern, among others) who had just graduated high school, and instead of going to college, they basically just hung out at the quarry and slacked off. they feuded with the local college kids.
as the movie reveals, the cutters was a name given to their parents, because they were locals who worked with, and cut stone.
according to imdb, they were called "stoners", but didn't want it to seem like it was a drug reference, so they changed it to cutters for the movie.
pretty cool stuff. good movie, too.

Yeah, I'm right there with ya, nation87.
Totally late to that party. When I did finally see it (after months of badgering from Bone and Wheels) I was sort of disappointed in the sense that I thought the the whole song was about events in the movie- when it's really only the "cutters" and "townies" that are directly related.
But a good flick either way.
Cinzano!!!

When I first heard the song, I wasn't sure if it was a reference to the movie or not. But it's such a dorky-cute movie. Also, it's pretty much impossible to bike at the same speed as semit-truck on the freeway. That part bugs me the most.

yeah, i loved the movie back when.
i always assumed the cutters in the song referred to girls like our protagonist and what she might do to herself when she's alone. but that's ths for you - ever multi-layered meanings possible.
hardly the stuff of 'the feelgood movie of the year.'

I love the Breaking Away reference, a great underdog movie! I also see a reference to Self Injurious Behavior (SIB). Back in college I worked direct care in a locked Psychiatric facility. SIB was not uncommon, and cutting was one form of SIB: www.geocities.com/mytwistedreality/cutter.htmlLike the Hoodrat lyric, "i can't stand all the things that she sticks into her skin. like sharpened ballpoint pens. and steel guitar strings. she says it hurts. but it's worth it." Like many lyrics by THS, they work on many levels.

everything nation said is accurate ... the only thing i can add ... the bike race in the movie actually exists and it was one of the best sporting events (and parties) i have ever attended in my life. the bike race is at indiana university and is modeled after the indy 500 car race (as in 33 teams, 200 laps but 50 miles instead of 500). the track is not perfect (black cinders) and the bikes are not state of the art at all - think 5th grade level, but all are the same ... that is all part of the deal. the "townie" team is unrealistic as it is students only and 99.9% of the time, fraternity based. the competition is fierce ... even in the late 80's fraternities would pay for their riders to go to florida on winter and spring break to train. the other competition is who has the most kegs at their house for the weekend. anything less than 30 made your house a chump. i remember my 1975 yellow amc matador (the "banana boat") breaking down in buttfuknowhere, indiana on the way home. limped into ohio with the engine smokin'. somehow made it home.
