i had to make two lists for MOJO, one general and one for my underground column
it would have been a conflict of interest to include any bands i work with, hence no Black Mountain, Bon Iver, The War On Drugs, Parts & Labor or Okkervil River...
1. The Hold Steady ‘Stay Positive’ 2. Howlin Rain ‘Magnificent Fiend’ 3. Yeasayer ‘All Hour Cymbals’ (i realise it came out in late 2007) 4. Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks ‘Real Emotional Trash’ 5. Kelley Stoltz ‘Circular Sounds’ 6. Drive-By Truckers ‘Brighter Than Creation’s Dark’ 7. The Night Marchers ‘See You In Magic’ 8. Portishead ‘Third’ 9. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds ‘Dig!!! Lazarus, Dig!!!’ 10. No Age ‘Nouns’
MOJO Underground Albums of 2008 1. Fuck Buttons ‘Street Horrrsing’ 2. Boris ‘Smile’ 3. Harvey Milk ‘Life... The Best Game In Town’ 4. Hush Arbors ‘Hush Arbors’ 5. The Heads ‘Dead In The Water’ 6. Mammal ‘Lonesome Drifter’ 7. Awesome Color ‘Electric Aborigines’ 9. Torche ‘Meanderthal’ 8. Earth ‘The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull’ 10. Psychedelic Horseshit ‘Magic Flowers Droned’

Besides SP there were two albums that came out I thought were great.
1) Stay Positive 2) Asking for Flowers - Kathleen Edwards 3) Real Animal - Alejandro Escovedo.
These three stood out among the rest.
