Came across a couple of lesser known (at least to me) CF songs today. One of them, "Galveston" had such a haunting, lovely sound. Wonder why it didn't end up on INANW as I thought it was one of his best solo tunes and fit some of the themes of the album. Also there's a line about the God some people promote as being like the devil he loathes, which gives us more of a sense of how Craig's understanding of Christianity is very different than the mainstream version. Another of the songs I came across was "Isn't It?" from the Slim Dunlap benefit 7" series. Had to check that this song wasn't written by Craig as the vocal delivery is totally his style. Reminds me of the way he sang in Lifter Puller and early THS songs like "The Swish" and "Positive Jam." The guitar part and the bass sound are very reminiscent of Lifter Puller to me. I checked out the Slim Dunlap original and the vocal delivery isn't anything like this, Craig really took this song and made it his own. Highly recommending both these if you haven't checked 'em out already. My favorite Craig Finn deep cut is "Dennis & Billy" from the 2016 Newmeyer's Roof EP. It's a really simple song about two high school friends who go in different directions - one into the military and one into drugs.

*The lines in DH that it wasn't a date, not sure what to call it are perhaps the FUNNIEST lines in THS canon. Though I'm sure everyone's got their candidates. My vote for funniest lines is always: "She said you remind me of Rod Stewart when he was young/You've got passion, you think that you're sexy/And all the punks think that you're dumb."

If you're trying to draw connections between songs, is "The General" in Blackout Sam the girl with the coat in Epaulets ("And her jacket makes her look just like a general")?

I KNOW this would end up being a terrible idea from a practical perspective, but how about when this madness ends the band has a Unified Scene boat cruise "...on the Mississippi Riverrrrr..." (sing it in your head as if it's from Stuck Between Stations for maximum effect): uproxx.com/life/mississippi-river-cruise-travel-booking-2022/

Does anyone think that the remaining shows of the year in Los Angeles,Toronto, Melbourne and Brooklyn will go ahead? Even if lockdown is lifted wouldn't there be a transitional period back to 'normal'with no theatre, sports, gigs etc. I'm trying to Stay Positive but realistically will there shows in 2020? Not just THS but anyone? Anyone got an educated guess? My pessimistic best guess is that there won't be any more THS shows for 2020. Unless and until there's a vaccine or a test that provides immediate and dependable results, I don't see how large groups of people can or would congregate at concerts. Now I've started imagining THS doing the first "physical distancing" concert where they play at the outdoor summer stage at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, and we all stay 6 feet away from one another while we listen. It would be so weird that I'd love it to happen.

Poorly thought out question:
Is the general in "Blackout Sam" ('The general made a gesture of contrition') the same as the main character in Epaulets ('And her jacket makes her look just like a general')?

If I recall correctly (at other venues, not specifically Toronto), the 3 or 4 day passes are a problem because they can only be claimed at the will call with your ID. In fact, I think I remember a story going around these parts about one member of the Unified Scene sending another member their ID so that the second member could use the will call tickets.
But for any other type of ticket there's usually an option to get them by PDF and/or mail--depends on the ticket vendor though (AXS, Eventbrite, or whatever).

My guesses are based on the following:
1 - NYC - At first I thought Rhinestone Cowboy was Nashville (because the song also refers to Broadway), but then when it seemed that each clue was for a different place and #2 is Nashville, then I guess this is NYC. Although #1 and #2 could both be Nashville. 2 - Nashville - By the power of google, I found out there's a book about Robert Altman's movie "Nashville" called "Nashville: The Making of Robert Altman's Masterpiece", which is pretty close to the song posted. Also they Brooklyn Bowl Nashville's website has indicated for months that THS is coming "in June". 3 - Denver - John Denver. Because I figure there's a better bet they'll play in Denver than West Virginia. 4 - LA - The song is all Hollywood this and Hollywood that, and LA seems big enough to support a weekend of shows. 5 - Toronto - YYZ is the airport code for Toronto's airport.
We shall see!

My best guesses, based on the 5 clues they've posted this weekend:
1 - NYC 2 - Nashville 3 - Denver 4 - LA 5 - Toronto
The only problem for me is that I'd want to go to ALL of them.

A small list of the live stuff that differs from the albums: - "It was cocksucking summer" - "...I only knew it was a movement of Jaaaaaah people" - "Let's cause some trouble here!" - "...kissed in your car and we fucked in your church" - "Naughty, naughty Northside" - "John's last CD" -> "John's second to last CD" -> "The Sunset Tree" A "limited release" variation from last summer: If she wants to help the cause, Tell her to send feral hogs.

This is excellent news, as Nashville (the city itself, as well as the shows) absolutely ruled. I'll be back for sure.

"I saw Tad talking to them during a verse, and when the “La-la-la-la” backing vocal that he would normally do came up, he stepped back, and they ran up to his mic to do the part, then ran back to their own mics stage left. (I think that got an extra cheer, but it was hard to tell…)"
THS posted a boomerang GIF (??) of the Horn Steady doing the "la-la-la-la" on Twitter, so whoever runs their social media liked this part too.
"(In many ways, though, the coolest bit of “Blackout Sam” both times was Tad and Steve doing the guitar “solo” in unison.)"
Totally agree, and at the show in Seattle Craig did a funny thing where he kept glancing back and forth between them, becoming more and more impressed.
"...starting with “Certain Songs,” which I’m not sure I’ve heard live before; definitely not just Franz and Craig for the first verses."
I think it was in Brooklyn last year when I heard them do it this way for the first time, and I thought it was really great.

* Hot Soft Light was only played twice - also a bit surprising. At this point it feels weird when Constructive Summer actually ends, and not flows directly into a one-two punch with Hot Soft Haha this is so true.

I'm missing Massive Nights for this first time this year and I'm filled with FOMO. I wonder how many people have been to at least one show each year, including this year? Brooklyn Bowl capacity is about 600 people. Have 100 people been every year? More? Less? What do you think?

I think it’s their best album since Stay Postive, and that Blackout Sam is their best song since Entitlement Crew. Definitely fond of this one. Watching set lists get posted after the summer shows, it occurred to me that Blackout Sam into Resurrection would be an amazing transition toward the end of a set. They did Crucifixion Cruise into Resurrection in Nashville. It's hard to imagine topping that.

Coming in for the Saturday show (including soundcheck), can’t wait for THS weekend hangs.... Ryan Ryan, I hope I didn't freak you out by jamming a beer into your hand as you walked by me Saturday night. Long story short, in Brooklyn you were cool enough to indulge me when I wanted a picture with you because you vaguely resembled a friend of mine who couldn't make that show. I saw you hanging at the side of the stage, bought a beer to take over to you, but then you happened to be walking past just as I turned around. Saved me a trip.

They played Epaulets live in Nashville, and it was a lot easier for me to "follow" the first part. (And the whole song sounded pretty great too.)

Every time I listen to Epaulets, I have a problem mentally "catching up" for the first 30 seconds or so. It just sounds like a jumble of noise until it (or I) settles in, following which I really like it. But I can barely listen to the first little bit.

Sadly, I have been unable to find a piano key tie, so there goes THAT idea for THSCS Nashville.

Yeah, I noticed that but didn't know what to make of it. But yeah, revenge makes as much sense as anything. It fits pretty good as a lost piece between when Charlemagne cut a deal with The Skins, fucks it up ("...he put the drugs down the draig/ he's gonna have to come up with seven grand some other way") and the beatdown at The Metal Bar ("...went down to the taverns/ tried to make an impression (...) I think they made themselves perfectly clear", "down in the basement, bashing out his brains", "where were you when the blood spilled/ they almost killed me"). I can't say it's the same event, though, but it sounds like it's in the same part of the world. And to add to the confusion: It's not quite clear if the girl in the story is in on the setup. Did she get screwed by the chef and the chaffeur too, or was she perfectly informed about what was going to happen when they entered the kitchen? I've twisted myself around even further. Assuming that it's the girl speaking through the first part of the song (all the way up to "Take a flight to Durango..."), then when she says "I hope I still know you when this is all over" could mean that she's in on the set-up. However, if it's also her saying "Yeah, I've known those guys for a bit/And it sounded like they're pretty much over it", I'm not sure that points to a double-cross. I read it more as the chef and the chauffeur are pretty much over the whole enterprise, which is why they're giving her the info and willing to split the take three ways. But then I'm back to not understanding why they provided her with the info just to double-cross them.

Right before the bridge he says "It sounded like they're pretty much over it," so the narrator had previously done something to piss off the chef and the chauffeur, thus the set-up. Yeah, I noticed that but didn't know what to make of it. But yeah, revenge makes as much sense as anything.

So, the narrator "Got pretty screwed by the chef and the chauffeur." But how/why? Did they get "screwed" inadvertently because the information was wrong? Or did the chef and the chauffeur intentionally screw them? If the latter, what's in it for the chef and the chauffeur? I can't think of anything, so I figure it must be the former. Any theories? I always thought they were set up. It was a trap. And it didn't end well...... That's what I thought at first, except what do the chef and the chauffeur gain from doing that? I suspect I'm thinking about this too hard.
