I’m currently eating my body weight of terrible, terrible food in Wetherspoons. It’s really something. Come say hi! Just arrived- where are you? By the table of toothless Irishmen singing ballads to themselves

Holy shit, last night was really something. Probably the most exciting setlist I’ve witnessed. Was in no shape to get up front yesterday, but enjoyed it a lot from the balcony with delboydrums, tbob and lots of other great people. Got waaay to drunk. Let’s hope night #3 is just as good. Yeah, I think that’s the best I’ve ever seen them to be fair, unbelievable setlist!

I’ve only listened to it 3 times but I really like it. I love the sax (very Clarence E Street) and although it’s different to anything they’ve done before it’s nice to know they’re still cutting amazing songs and pushing themselves at this stage. I agree there is a CF solo vibe to it, especially in Kaufman’s production, but with Franz back on board I wonder if his influence is also present here. Is it a Franz co-write? I never notice the songwriting credits on these new tracks! Regardless I can’t wait to hear it live in London, and also skepticatfirst’s thoughts on its place in the story. I've been trying to find writing credits for all of the new songs for a while, and just a couple of days ago I was thinking about posting a thread to see if anyone has found it anywhere. If you google the lyrics for Entitlement Crew, the first hit (the one incorporated into Google) shows credits. But I can't seem to find it for the other tracks. Anyway, I think you are right. I think Franz has had a lot of influence one some of these new tracks, and it wouldn't surprise me if he's credited on at least five of them. That's way more than on, say, Stay Positive, where he's listed on three songs (Yeah Sapphire, Magazines, Joke About Jamaica). And yeah, I'd love to hear skepticatfirst's thoughts about this. My first impression is that this is either The Narrator or Charlemagne (sort of leaning towards the latter) describing the time before the crucifixion, and that the "she" is Mary. And I think the guy standing next to him when they "scouted the location" sounds a lot like Gideon to me. But this might be a case for the Here Goes thread. Also, wouldn't be surprised if Steve had some writing input into these new tunes given he's been playing with the band for nearly 9 years and has only had Teeth Dreams to get stuck into!

Can't believe you're not all going to QPR v Stoke on the Saturday. £25.00... it's got a chance. Haven't seen a Steve Mcclaren side since watching Boro in the early 00s, is he still making completely unfathomable substitutions? In a related note, possibly asking a lot, but has anyone got any recommendations for somewhere half decent near Hackney Picturehouse to watch Arsenal v United on Sunday (KO 16:30)?

Also, can I suggest some much nicer preshow pubs than the bloody Oxford Arms to you all, albeit a little further afield. I recommend Tapping the Admiral, 77 Castle Road NW1 8SU. Five mins from the Electric Ballroom on a backstreet, but a lovely pub with a great range of beers. The Lady Hamilton, on Kentish Town Road (in Kentish Town itself) is 10 mins walk and run by the same people who run Tapping the Admiral. The Grafton Arms on Prince of Wales Road is decent pub. All three are miles better than the ones right by the Electric. Thank you. Sold on Tapping The Admiral, did a quick image search and it ticks several boxes already... Period Victorian interior? Check. Back street corner boozer? Check. Burning Sky on cask? Check. I'll stop being an ale bore now. I'll be in there once I land in Camden off the rattler on Friday night if anyone's around...

When I posted earlier, I thought this was the thread about the Craig shows. I realize it's not. Even happier to announce that I've managed to get Friday off, and are coming over for all three shows. It cost me an additional plane ticket (so now I have a useless one), but it's all worth it. Great! See you at the shows!

. I like Blankets too. It remind me of the sound of a band I really like, but I can't quite pinpoint it. Very americana, in a very specific way. Not like parts of Clear Heart Full Eyes, who flirted more with country/bluegrass. Sounds like a cross between Richmond Fontaine, Marah and The Mystery Jets’ album “Radlands” to me... great work.

Yo. So looking at accommodation for Friday and Saturday night and got me thinking if anyone has shared accommodation before?
I’m in a hotel for Sunday but gonna try and do at least one of Friday or Saturday on a budget.
It’d be cool if we had a hostel dorm for the Unified Scene for the weekend, wouldn’t it? Or is everybody else couch surfing/hotelling etc?

I think it's a general trend in Hold Steady records getting a bit too packed. It started on Boys And Girls. I love that record, but there's just a little bit too much stacked onto each song. I get a feeling that's why the mix doesn't sound all that good either. Stay Positive is in some ways cleaner, but there's still that combination of lots of guitars and added instruments on the top of it. Heaven Is Whenever has that slick and shiny production, who makes it both a bit lound and a bit bland. And Teeth Dreams is just a tad too noisy for me. The guitars aren't any heavier than those on Separation Sunday, but they're far too many and they don't always work that well together. I think Almost Killed Me and Separation Sunday are the easiest and most pleasant Hold Steady records, sound- and production wise. They are way cleaner, clearer and breathes in a way the last four records don't. That being said, I really, really love Boys And Girls, and I think all of the last three albums are great as hell. But I guess this is a part of the reason why they sound so much more fresh and alive when playing live compared to the studio versions of the songs. Couldn’t agree more. It’s like they shoehorned elements into the sound way too quickly after Sep Sun. It’s only now with breathing space and time to reflect we get what I consider to be the perfect Hold Steady balance in the brand new material. You can hear Tad, Craig, Steve, Franz, Galen and Bobby working to give the mix engineer an easier time... so much so that the new stuff doesn’t just sound like someone’s copy and pasted the idea of horns from some classic rock LP from the 70s onto their tunes, it sounds like there’s room for it. I really think the latest stuff is the most technically and musically cohesive stuff they’ve come up with since AKM/SS. You can show off all of the rock trinkets/moves as much as you like on BaGiA thru Teeth Dreams but nothing beats the restrained AKMesque cohesion on the new material for me. Also, in terms of the lineage - I think of Heaven Is Whenever as THS’s “Be Here Now” - the one after the relatively perfect record that is Stay Positive (I mean perfect in terms of the small ‘c’ classic rock sound they were going for around this time, not in terms of the overall repertoire). There’s too much compression on HiW, it’s too insular, it’s very anxious sounding. Even now I struggle to listen to it without feeling on edge. Teeth Dreams has the sonic benefit of a band rediscovering themselves... the latest stuff sounds, well, like everyone knows their role (in a good way!). On a seperate note, I listened to Stay Positive on vinyl tonight and the press is absolutely shocking - I’ve got OPEC crisis era pressings of loads of 70s stuff that manage to gain livelier than this. The sonic balance is there but there’s just no response under the needle. I also watched some live THS from Later With Jools... and compared with some THS from now, and they are undeniably a much better live band now than they ever were then - which sounds mad because all the press and impetus in the UK around then was about how good they were live (and they were and are in different ways now), but now they’re SO much better in my opinion, and still just as exciting.

Ace! Looks like the show was moved from Deaf Institute to Night & Day then? Any idea why that was? Deaf Institute is a much better room imo. Shame I missed this, looks fun anyway. That’s what whoring out myself in a fucking function band to pay the real bands studio bill will do sometimes.
