K I'm a huge Hold Steady fan here in Alberta. Is there any talks of a Hold Steady Tour in Canada? I'm a huge fan and I feel Like they are never gonna be here! There only canadian shows they have ever played was in Toronto. Hopefully they play some dates in western canada soon.

I'm in Ottawa and feel like a Canadian tour would be a great idea. I went into Compact Music today at 1pm. The guy had sold 3 copies of APR, I bought one and I know two others who were there later in the day that did the same thing. This can't possibly be as small a community of fans as I think it is, Ottawa is a tough market and they have it. I know those are small #'s but by scale I have it figured a bit on the 4 shops x 6 = 24 or so, the major idiots at maybe 10 x 500 markets larger than this x their scale = minimum 30,000 copies moved on day one in North America based on our Capitals #'s. Ottawa wants them is the final conclusion.
CANADA WANTS THE HOLD STEADY!

Tell Red I'm sorry but I titled the post that way to get people's attention! But that is my concern also norhtern wish. They probably base alot of thier tours on where they sell albums! (Probably why they tour the UK so much) I know one other person who like the Hold steady here in alberta. I geuss the only way to get them out here is by getting thier name out here in canada. If I knew they were comign though this city would be covered head to toe in posters.

I'm sure Koob answered this a while back. Something to do with the British government making it difficult for US bands to tour in Canada. No I don't get it either.

pretty sure it is the canadian gov't that is the problem. i have read that it is actually quite difficult for an american touring band to get the proper visa to tour in canada. a great deal of paperwork must be filed far in advance of gigs and you have to carry copies of your visas (obviously) but also your contracts with you to cross the border.
i'm sure it is probably a pain in the ass for foreign musicians to tour here too. americans are just always surprised because visiting canada as a tourist is so easy

It's because one member of the touring party has an ancient DWI on their card, which Canadian customs and immigration take an extremely keen and obstructive interest in. Getting in and out of the country becomes a huge drag as a result.

Hoodrat and James,
Those reasons would make sense to me, but how can you explain them playing quite often in Toronto? They have played in Toronto as recently as last November.

I actually noticed in the booklet to a positive rage, that they do have issues getting across the border. But If your doing a canadian tour, then you only have to deal with that problem twice. Many bands will play canada all at once. Thats what THS should do lol

I heard they hate Canada because y'all don't dance and you think you're so much better than Americans.
EDITED for clarity's sake. My comment was intended as a joke. I am a non-dancing Canadian with an overweening superiority complex*.
*In other words, a Torontonian.

its definitely one of the best shows I've ever been to. I remember things going really fucking nuts during Hoodrat and staying that way til the end. Then they came back for that encore of Ressurection, it was so fucking cool. Ottawa the next night was pretty damn good as well.

I have heard rumor, or possibly rumour, of a small number of Canadian dates, but nothing confirmed, no cities, dates, etc. So I should probably have kept my trap shut. But my information on other stuff has turned out to be pretty reliable.

i've had to come to Canada for work and it is a tremendous pain in the ass from a paperwork standpoint.if THS' experience is anything like mine, they probably have to obtain completed forms from every club they play complete with covering letters.and that's before you even get into the issues that may or may not come up vis a vis the criminal records of band and/or crew.
ftr,i have no criminal record of note and despite this i have been treated shabbily by Canadian customs every single time i've entered.
unlike a lot of Americans,i like Canada a lot. or at least i like the land and the women(straight shooters, they party harder than American women)but you Canadian guys I'm not such a big fan of,sorry. the vast majority of dudes i've met up there come off as arrogant and unfriendly on such a consistent basis that it can't be dismissed. and your reputation for being cold fish at rock shows is deserved.loosen up,Canada.

I did'nt create this post for a canada bashing. Other than the Hold Steady. Canada has some of the best musicians in the world, the best places in the world, and the best people! If you ever need a crash course on some canadian music let me know.

If you ever need a crash course on some canadian music let me know. oh,so because i think Canadian guys in general are unfriendly, arrogant assholes that somehow makes me ignorant of Canadian music? there's an arrogant asshole statement if i've ever heard one. ftr,Hank Snow(whom you probably know nothing about) is a god of country music,The Band are my favorites OF ALL TIME HANDS DOWN,Bran Van's first album is one of the most underheard and therefore underappreciated albums of the last 10 years and the contemporary scenes of Toronto and Montreal(big fan of Stars and the Dears) are among the most vibrant and exciting today. i could go on because i've probably forgotten more about Canadian music than you'll ever know. so maybe it's YOU who should be coming to ME for a little Canadian musical education. quit while you're ahead, bro.

take it easy, drtpants! the canadian dudes here begging to rock out at a hold steady show have not yet earned a bashing. they haven't flamed you just yet, only said nice things about canada. and our brethren to the north are welcome here too.

and our brethren to the north are welcome here too. absolutely. i'm making generalizations. individuals need not get their Maple Leafed panties in a bunch.when i'm on the ground,i still take it on a case by case basis like any sensible person. but again,i stand by my opinions.

I didn't say that thing about the Canadian music crash course to be arrogant. What I meant to get through to drtpants is that Canadians do know to hot rock out, loosen up and most importantly show pride to the music our country has produced. Bands like The Dears, Stars, Broken Social Scene, Sam Roberts, Joel Plaskett show, that if it wasn't for us Canadians supporting these bands, then people all over the world might not get the opportunity to listen to them. That's what I was trying to get across. I'm sorry if I came off ignorant, but I don't like hearing negative opinions on Canadians, that's not what this post was to be about. So Stay Positive and Bring the Hold Steady to Canada!
