For USers in the US, we have exactly one week until the release of A Positive Rage. According to all reports- the bits and pieces that have surfaced here, reports from people who were at the Chicago show included in the package, and the generally warm 'n fuzzy (very fuzzy) memories of the BAGIA shows- this is going to be a pretty outstanding document of five dudes, some adventures in the wild west, a fair amount of beer consumption, and rapturous joy shared with increasingly larger numbers desirous of what Bruuuuuuce himself called "the magic and the mystery of rock and roll".
Well, yeah. We knew that. We're the ones who keep coming back, time after time, from all corners of the universe (lookout, Albany- storm's coming through!)
Last summer, we coordinated efforts to get Stay Positive to the top of the iTunes rock download chart and in their general top ten for the better part of a week; following that, we put the album at #70 on the Billboard chart. This was done with NO exposure on MTV, regional (at best) radio coverage, and in the face of competition who had these (and other) advantages.
We've got a rep for reaching out to the unconverted pretty aggressively and unapologetically. I'm proposing that, with A Positive Rage, we live up to it once again- with a wrinkle.
In Oklahoma City, we've got a classic rock station with a DJ who, on occasion, gets to slip material in that he thinks is damn cool- I once heard The Donnas slid in during a lunchtime program of Camaro Rock called "The Mullet"- and I fully intend to see to it that he gets a copy of this package.
If we identify sympathetic outlets- especially "adult alternative" stations and the more adventurous classic rock formats- and attempt to cultivate fans among their ranks, it might be worth it. Worst case scenario, we're out twelve bucks.
Additionally, I'd like to remind you that, if you've got friends who aren't sold on the band yet, we've got more arrows in our quiver than we did back in June/July. The site is becoming increasingly robust- lyrics for the official releases are up and, though I don't want to promise anything that can't be delivered, there is talk of official b-side lyrics as well as other additions- and is a decent clearinghouse for anyone who wants to know the dogma before taking a hit, holding their breath, and dunking their heads. Between the board, the site's Flickr feed, the Wiki, the Twitter, and the social networking sites, the inclusiveness we've prided ourselves on should be something we can use to our advantage.
If someone's not sure of it yet, send 'em to the site and tell them to click the links. If you're feeling generous, hook 'em up. Better still, though it's short notice, it'd be awesome if we were able to set up a network of houseparties to screen the DVD next weekend- this is a band that is best experienced as a communal thing, not alone, in the dark, wearing headphones.
Let's recap:
-Reach out to sympathetic local media. Some of these guys will gladly talk up something they get a chance to experience themselves. If you get any radio play out of it, let us know- we need to be sure to cultivate these alliances where we can.
-Use the tools we've got at hand to marshal the troops next week!
And don't forget to get pumped about it yourselves! Wear a tee shirt or two this weekend if you're out running errands (mine may be going to the maternity ward.) Mention it in your status on Facebook/Twitter/Myspace/whatever. Stick a post-it on the fridge reminding you that you need milk, eggs, bread, and ROCK AND ROLL. Watch the VBlog if you can't make a show- it'll do a good job of reminding you why this is fun in the first place.
I'm not going to encourage anyone to climb any water towers with cans of Krylon, but, if it happens, I want pictures.
Let's do this, people.
