My amazing girlfriend scored tickets for the April 15th show at the LA Memorial Sports Arena. Hope to see some THS shirts in the mass of humanity we'll be struggling not to be swallowed up by

Kind of bummed that it is the same night as THS in Sacramento...whey would Bruce and the boys make me choose?

So, the rumor is that they'll be playing a full-length E Street album per night on this tour. I have no idea of the truth of it, but it could be amazing. I'm going on the first night of the tour, April 1 in San Jose. AND TH-F-S in Sacto.

Read a small blurb about this in Rolling Stone #1074 with Steven Van Zandt saying "If I could pick one, it's gotta be The River and the River outtakes on Tracks. Then you have a hell of a show." As long as I hear "Rosalita," "Thunder Road," and "Born to Run" I'm a happy guy.

Well, he plays "Born to Run" at every single show, so you are safe there. Last time I saw him, he played four songs off Darkness, which made me pretty happy.

So, I was at the San Jose show last night - I wrote this for another board, where they didn't want the setlist (and I couldn't provide it, anyway, that's just the kind of girl I am), but thought this crowd might also want to read a little about it:
I won't say anything about the setlist, as it's clear you guys are trying to not know, but it opened with one of my favorites, very hot, then slowed a bit, then began to build and build through the encore and, as usual, I walked out a couple inches above the ground. Also as usual, I hate the huge venues for their lack of intimacy and the dissipation of excitement beyond the front third of the space. I'd have been out of my seat dancing much of the time, but the person behind me would have been rightfully pissed, and the people next to me would have gotten a faceful of hips. Ok, one of them might have liked it, but probably not all night.
Anyway, he made me cry twice, and he did play two very important requests, though I think one of them was planned already. (The other was Growin' Up, which likely will not turn up at your show, so I'll tell.)
I didn't know a bunch of the songs, not surprising with my Springsteen history, but, unlike other shows, I could really relate to the choices, regardless. They were stylistically varied and everyone in the band got to shine at one point or another. There were also five guitars going at couple points. And, as bright as Bruce shines, none of those guitars shone as brightly as Nils Lofgren's. My lord, that boy can play. He got some great licks in.
Speaking of licks, Bruce is looking great, sounding great, but moving slightly stiffly. And he went on at least an hour late, but played for about two and a half hours, all told. WWCD will certainly correct me if I'm wrong.
So, yeah, I'm glad I went, for many reasons. Got to know WWCD a bit better. made my way alone in a big show, always good practice and met a couple nice guys next to me (Cal grads, a year ahead of me), got a broader view of the Bruce catalog since I last paid much attention, got to wag my ass around a little on a school night, and, most meaningfully, got some real emotional impact and sustenance from the motherfuckin' rock show.
And I believe in a promised land

Here is a link to an update about the show from nj.com which likes to find any reason to report on Bruce, not that I'm complaining. There are a few comments about the show and a few links to find out more info. Glad to hear it was mostly a positive experience despite the fact that you were seemingly not allowed to stand up. www.nj.com/springsteen/index.ssf/2009/04/bruce_springsteen_tour_still_n.html

I was allowed...it just would have been rude and, at the back of a big show like that, if everyone isn't feeling it (and, you know, it was a bunch of old folk) it just doesn't feel right.

That's why, as a veteran of many, many Springsteen tours, I've done only GA for the last three. It's completely amazing if you make the pit, and you don't have to worry about people yelling at you to sit down. Now, I am sore and useless the next day. Glad you enjoyed it Missalabama! 4 shows in April for me! Jack

No one to behind me to piss off. Not preferable seating but it solved the dancing and jumping around problem.

I'm seeing him in DC, I am stoked. Last time was a religious experience. Hopefully he'll play "Jungleland."

Thanks for the scene report, missalabamanobody! This will be my first Springsteen show so I appreciate your insight. One more week for me! I've spent the last two listening to the albums chronologically and finally read Eric Alterman's It Ain't No Sin to Be Glad You're Alive - The Promise of Bruce Springsteen. Taking a break from Bruce today to watch A Positive Rage

A nice, easy read.

A nice, easy read. I appreciated the way Alterman balanced his personas of fan and critic; telling personal recollections of what the music has meant in his life while still calling Bruce out at times ("Lest any confusion remain on this point, Bruce Springsteen is no saint."). I also like what he has to say about believing in the art, not the artist; a challenging point for someone like me who has easily fallen prey to blind hero worship on more than one occasion.

So, due to a scheduling conflict, I had to find someone to switch tix with from the 15th to the 16th. So glad it happened. Bruce Springsteen and Mike Ness together? Are you kidding me? Amazing show!

Now that's good luck, good setlist too. I assume Ness took some vocals on The Rising?

Just survived an amazing week of rock and roll. Hold Steady in Vegas, and the two Springsteen shows in LA. I'd say the first night was a bit better, but Mike Ness last night was a huge highlight. I love Social Distortion.
I went into this tour with low expectations (don't love the new record, the setlists look too much like last tour), but as usual, Bruce didn't disappoint. Two great shows. And, if all works out, I should be going to Philly for two more in a couple of weeks.
That said, the highlight of my week was THS. By a mile. My how things have changed for me....66 Springsteen shows and counting. But, I wish I could be in Coachella today.

Now that's good luck, good setlist too. I assume Ness took some vocals on The Rising? Bruce handled main vocal duty on "The Rising" while Ness played with the band. Both sang on "Bad Luck," though Ness had the lion's share of the vocals.

Shame...when I saw him last summer, he grabbed a sign from the audience. On one side was a request for the song "Boom Boom", on the other side, "London Calling". He went with "Boom Boom". I knew I should've gotten tickets for this! I'm hoping his Bonnaroo set blows all the ones before it out of the water.

He played "London Calling" at tonight's show. I was not there. Nice. (boo that he would play it without you there). I remember the Grammys when Bruce, Little Steven, Elvis Costello, and Dave Grohl played London Calling in honor of Joe Strummer's passing. A totally awesome moment I never expected to see on that show and one unlike anything the Grammys are likely to come up with again. Blown away by that one just sitting at home. I hope to see something that cool when he's in Jersey.
