I've been considering my senior thesis lately. I'm an American Studies major with a focus in popular culture, which means I get to write about anything awesome that I want. Naturally, I have a few ideas that involve The Hold Steady. But it got me wondering if anyone else has ever done a paper, research or anything else academic on the band. Anyone else do something? How was the experience?

I got permission to write about Positive Jam instead of Howl in an American Studies class in 2005. The essay is long gone. On a similar note, International Smalls Arms Traffic Blues (My love is like the border between Greece and Albania") and the second series of The Wire informed my current mini-dissertation on human trafficking into and out of the EU.

i kind of wish the hold steady had existed when i was writing college papers about anything awesome that i wanted. but alas, i just get to work as many lyrics as possible into meetings and arguments.
but i also have a copy of a paper that was circulated on the old board. it is probably the same one animobileaws has though

I used The Hold Steady, specifically the quote "I always dreamed about a Unified Scene" as the impetus for my college application essay. I posted it in the general thread if you're interested. Being 300 words, it doesnt delve too deeply into the band beyond the quote, but I think the overall theme of unity and togetherness will resonate with people here.

I just have to see how that fits into your college application.

I guess I'll just repost it here...
"I always dream about a unified scene" - The Hold Steady
This quote encapsulates everything I love about the world at large, as well as the theatre. It speaks to the idea that no one part is greater than the whole. I am perpetually amazed by seemingly unrelated elements falling into place every day, from the planets rotating around the sun to the traffic patterns on the highway. Given all the variables in this world, it’s a marvel that it doesn’t devolve into chaos. All the elements, like clockwork, rely on one another to keep the world in motion. It may not be perfect, but there is always a balance.
This notion of balance and collaboration, and how it relates to theatre, is what draws me so strongly to the art. I am but an actor. I may be good at what I do, but I do not and cannot do it alone. The playwright provides the words; the director, a vision; my fellow actors, live counterparts with which to share emotion and intensity. Set designers, lighting directors, costume and makeup artists, every miscellaneous cast/crew member, all serve a role and work together towards a shared vision.
Theatrical productions serve as microcosms of real life. In a world plagued by uncertainty, I find solace and joy in crafting a reflection of life that has a beginning, middle and end. Ideally, attempting to create a more complete version of the world on stage provides a greater understanding of human nature for all parties involved. When any one participant values their contribution more highly than that of their peers, the overall vision suffers. Collaboration, on stage and in life, is essential to survival and to progress. It provides clarity and unity in an otherwise scattered, senseless universe. Collaboration is what inspires me.
