So a few days ago my buddy forwarded me a twitter post that attempted to rank the top 64 Hold Steady songs and seed them into a March Madness-style tournament bracket. I say "attempted" because the rankings this guy came up with were pretty infuriating (Example: YCMHLY was ranked #2 overall; Killer Parties was a 10-seed). So obviously, I had to take it upon myself to do the thing correctly. Thought I would leave it here so that we all have something fun to do while we wait for ODP to drop on Friday. I tried to base the rankings on things like general popularity and live show frequency. Still, especially in the back half of the rankings, a lot comes down to just personal bias. So feel free to let me know how badly I messed up, how I left your favorite b-side off or whatever. -Steve

Great work!
No matter how these challenges are shaped, I always end up with Stuck Between Stations as the winner. But there's some tough matchups here. Both Sweet Payne and DJs could easily have been in the final four for me.

Personally though, I had it getting knocked out by Stevie Nix in the "elite 8." My final 4 was Stevie, Killer Parties, Resurrection, and Constructive Summer. Constructive edges out Stevie for the win

Constructive edges out Stevie for the win I ended up with the exact same thing (I will say, though, that I would've had Stevie Nix losing to Resurrection had it been on the other side). I agree with a good amount of the seeding; my one drawback is that Esther isn't on here, but I admittedly have it ranked way higher than most people. Hopefully the songs we're getting Friday are good enough to make next year's bracket!

Goddamn I love "Esther." That Wurlitzer intro kills me every time.

I did this a while back and I had Resurrection beating Hornets in the final. But Hornets versus Stations in the second round was brutal!!

I did this at some point last year and it was tough but Resurrection won. Resurrection always wins.

This was fun. Thanks for putting it together. Some great songs had to be eliminated early. I assume the "winner" goes up against 40 Bucks? Bracket if anyone cares: imgur.com/a/EMaRWy1

I started this shortly after you posted, in the top left corner. I still can't decide between Stations and Hornets.
