So there were apparently three new songs at the NJ show tonight. (!!!)
And of course there have been 9 new released post-2016 "where the Teeth Dreams follow-up would have been" songs.
What are people's brutally honest/wildly fantastic assessments of this situation? Will THS be the rare band that *actually* pivots to the occasional one-off digital releases in place of actual albums? (I don't know if you guys remember this but I feel like TONS of rock bands batted around the idea of doing this between like, 2002 and 2008, and they mostly did not follow through.)
Or are they just taking it real slow, and likely to cull an album's worth of tracks from whatever occasional sessions are producing these songs, put out a record in 2020 or 2021?
I know I shouldn't be so old-fashioned in my thinking as to wonder where the new album is. I understand from how they play shows now that this clearly isn't the main gig/top priority for the folks in the band. It feels very much like the idea is to keep the band together and make some money from it, but not burn anyone out by insisting on the kind of album-promo cycle that they've done in the past. I don't mean that in a critical way. I'm happy to get the occasional new tune and to get to see them in my neighborhood every year at Massive Nights. Beats a break-up. But I also love the new songs and can't help myself from fashioning them into an album-like playlist, wondering what the missing pieces or swap-outs might be.
Maybe this was all discussed to death last year when new songs were coming out semi-regularly; apologies if that's the case. But I've been dying to know what other fans think of this. I admit my speculation was piqued when that Craig interview with Rolling Stone came out where he sort of disparages the last two THS records...

Denver Haircut was played at the second London show (it was awesome) and Blackout Sam was played at the third London show (I wasn't there ). They also played another song, You Did Good Kid, that night, bringing us to a total of 4 new ones! I've got a playlist of the 9 songs released so far and I think it flows pretty well as an album as released chronologically, although I'm not a big fan of The Last Time She Talked To Me but other than that it's a super strong collection of songs. I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't release any songs before these shows as they have previously done, but maybe they haven't had time to record them, or they're gearing up for a physical release of these singles? They've said they have no plans for an album and all the stress that comes with it, which is understandable. I think we'd all love a new record but I adore these singles so I really cannot complain.

Finn has said there is not going to be a "new album" per se, but at some point the individual tracks will be collected into a physical release of some form.

I generally like the process but agree that The Last Time That She Talked To Me is clearly my least favourite.
I arranged the existing songs into a playlist too, although I tried to avoid chronological order and went on how I thought they fit together. It's here if anyone is interested:
Guess I shouldn't get too attached if there's at least 3 more songs to go...

There is not a single song that I dislike that they have played and/or released . I really enjoy “the last time...” 🤷🏻♂️
Also, “Entitlement Crew” is pure Boys & Girls era perfection!

Three more new songs in CT last night!! Blackout Sam, Epaulettes, You Did Good Kid.
I know a proper "album" or a full 30-city tour is probably not in the cards, but maybe they're building up to some big release before the Constructive Summer or Brooklyn Bowl shows?! Just so happy that this band continues to find ways to maje new music! Can't wait to hear these new songs!

It’s 5 new ones now. With the “cryptic” stuff being mentioned I honestly think a new album is on the cards.

Stereogum did list THS as an album they’re excited for this year. Maybe they got some insider info.

Stereogum did list THS as an album they’re excited for this year. Maybe they got some insider info. I think they have included them on a list like this once earlier too, with nothing to back it up other than the release of songs. That being said, I think it's more and more unlikely that these songs won't be collected on a physical release of some sort. I'm not an expert on the economy of this stuff, but you would think Hold Steady has a big (and dedicated) enough fan base to make a release like this profitable, even without a regular release cycle to back it up. But it might be that a label has a different idea of this. What is it now? Nine released songs, and five more live-only songs? I can't believe they have written this much material AND keep on adding more weekends year by year, for them not to release them in some way.

It doesn't look like any of these five are floating around YouTube yet.
Normally, I like to wait for studio versions of THS tunes, but I don't know what their timeframe is here and I've gotten used to periodic new THS.

Finn has said there is not going to be a "new album" per se, but at some point the individual tracks will be collected into a physical release of some form. Yeah for anyone else wondering - this was a question Craig responded to at the Camden Q&A, where he definitely dampened expectations for an album but enhanced the prospect of a "collection" of songs they've worked on over the last few years. Spoke to one of the band after the show and they reckoned they had 15 songs in total.

The songs are out there, so the main difference between a collection of some sort, and a proper album, is... what, exactly? There will still be a sequencing and a cover art. It might be explicitly non-thematic, but for all we know, proper albums have been written the same way. And if 15 is the number, there's only one more to be premiered.
