Eureka!
Excited about the visual concept on the Bandcamp page being similar to the release of Entitlement Crew/Snake In The Shower. Four new songs - there should be an album, or at least an EP now.

Hell yeah! I really needed this today. First impressions: Eureka is awesome, if a little rough, and Esther sounds more like a Craig Finn song but I'm into it.

Great stuff. I actually prefer Esther, though it sounds like it could've been on CF's last one. Anyway - 4 new songs! Exciting times.

Saxophone on Esther? Has franz taught himself (yet) another instrument? I wouldn't put it past him!! Stuart Bogie, Michael Leonhart and Annie Nero are credited as "Additional performers" A quick Google tells me that Stuart Bogie is a sax player

Many thanks - I had not seen that about the other perfomers.
I prefer Eureka to Esther.
I wonder what the odds are of THS playing a gig in Eureka one day? Along the lines of previous trip to Ybor city.

Love Eureka.
Edit: Lyrics
It was a strange request and they'd just barely met But somehow he didn't seem like a stranger She knew what her sister always said about the angels, how they show up when you never expect them She never expected
When she was mostly in the phone booth at the end of her rope Spending half her time just hope-hope-hoping Then someone finally showed up with a shot at the coast So she gets in the car and they go
Goodbye Central Valley, hello Shasta-Trinity You look even better than you did in the pictures He didn't say much she never thought it was love It was mostly about the adventure
When they get to Eureka they crash with his friends They had five in one room they had four in one bed She had sixty-eight bucks she said she only had ten Acid management checking all the balances
There was this whole long scene with some mountains and some lakes And most of it was real but some of it seemed fake Try not to judge me by the pictures that I take I've always had some pretty shaky hands
He never came out and said it, he just kind of implied it The dashboard almost swallowed them whole He didn't say much she never thought it was love It was mostly about the control
They put the speed against the sedatives futures and derivitaves Some deep freedom getting tangled up in tenements You gotta put the negatives up against he benefits Crisis management getting out ahead of it
But the guy that she left with ain't the things that he said he is He's a dick when he drinks and she's scared of his friends He went through her purse and he let her keep ten He never wants to do anything
There was a guy at the door there was a gun on the bed There was a dog on the rope that had a cross on its head Let me introduce you some deep freedom We're just kind of getting used to it
No gods no kings let freedom ring No faith no sin no hymns to sing She just wanted to see some things No gods no kings let freedom ring He never wants to do anything
My country 'tis of thee sweet land of liberty Sleeping in the parking lots of pharmacies No gods no kings let freedom ring He never wants to do anything
So excited for London.

Eurka hit me the most on first listen, but after a few rounds Esther is my favourite of the new ones. Agree with those of you who describes it as a Craig song - not just the quite mellow sound and melody, but also the lyrics. The great emphasis on a female character (seemingly) outside of the THS narrative, and the way he describes her.
None of these are as good as Entitlement Crew, but I think they both are better than Snake In The Shower. Great bag of songs. Looking forward to hear them on friday.

Esther and Entitlement Crew are at least as good for me as any Hold Steady tune Entitlement Crew has grown to a real favourite too me. Up there with the best. It's so Hold Steady-y and still so different. And it encapsuled the experience of going overseas for those four shows in november/december in a perfect way.

Is anyone else refreshing their music store of choice at least every hour to see if they are available for purchase yet? It's just me, isn't it?

buy on bandcamp! it's the most artist friendly of all digital services. Seconded. They'll make pennies from iTunes. Buy from Bandcamp and support the K&L Foundation. Jersey Mike's family deserves it.
