Now that we've had a couple weeks for it to sink in, what is everyone's favorite and least favorite FITF track? And why? I'll start
Favorite: Roman Guitars. Very different musically, sounds epic. Classic Finn picture painting. Paired with a hopeful message
Least Favorite: Christine. Lots of people love it so maybe I'm missing something, but to me it's boring musically and the story is the same old cliche: guy loves girl, girls doesn't reciprocate love, guy is always there for girl when her heart gets broken.

OK, I'll play along, and my sense is, these will be wildly different. The album is so strong, it's hard to pick least favorites.
Favorite - "I Was Doing Fine (Then a Few People Died)" This horse wins by many lengths. I love this song so much. Easily one of my top 10 Craig compositions. I can't say enough about this track.
Least Favorite - That's where it gets hard. It was "Roman Guitars" for awhile, but the lyrics are so strong, maybe it's "Sandra from Scranton" but I like that too.
Love this record.

Favourite: "I Was Doing Fine" - it just sounds so upbeat and familiar, though I do think it fades too early.
(Tied in very close 2nd place: Maggie / Newmeyer's / Roman Guitars)
Least Favourite: "Christine" - I like the song, but agree that it seems to cover old ground.
All in all though, it really is such a rich sounding record. It has CF's usual / expected lyrical brilliance, but also has so much more musically than I would have expected.
Loving it. Can't stop playing it.
(Oh, and I reckon Roman Guitars wouldn't sounded out of place on Teeth Dreams or HIW !)

I also think "I was Doing Fine" is far and away my favourite. Least favourite is probably Sandra or Christine.

Trapper Avenue and Roman Guitars are my favourites Christine is probably my least favourite on record, but was beautiful live (and acoustic)

Not much love for Sandra or Christine!
I wasn't big on Christine when I heard it acoustic during promos, but on the album I really like it. Not my favorite, but still good. And I really like Sandra.
Favorites are hard on this one. I like all of them. I'll probably have to go with Maggie, though. It's the song I learned to cover live, and it strikes a lot of deeply personal nerves with me. I cry sometimes when I listen to it, and I had to play it ten times in a row at home to get it out of my system so I didn't cry when I played it live (although I still almost do). Runners up are: Newmyer's and Sarah Calling from a Hotel.
Least favorite. Mmmm. Maybe St. Peter. It's been getting a lot of attention in reviews and stuff, but I don't know. I don't dislike it, and I think it's a pretty cool song, but something about the sound doesn't strike me the way the others do.

My favourites are Newmyer's Roof - the 'tom there must be something yeaahhhhh' bit gets me excited, i think i might have mentioned that before - and Roman Guitars, I love the lyrics even though I'm not entirely sure what the song's about, and the horns really make it something special. "All your little molecules add up to something drunk and cute." Brilliant. Also "When the lights come up, the floor is covered up in cups" is something I have experienced at every Hold Steady show, got a chuckle out of me the first time.
My least favourite is Trapper Avenue. The build up just doesn't quite work for me, it's a little too long and at first it seems a bit empty and grating to me. It's great when it all comes together, but I find myself wanting to listen to this song less than the others. But that's a minor quibble for what is really a great album.
I can understand the Christine hate, but to me there's some beauty in its simplicity and it strikes a chord (Fmaj/G perhaps, hehe) with me. Sandra is strong but kind of blends in with the rest sonically.

Surprised to see Sandra mentioned as the least favourite track among many of you. I think it's one of the best on the album, along with Maggie and Newmyer's Roof. I really enjoy Roman Guitars and I Was Doing Fine as well, but they're not as special as the other three.
Least favourite must be Christine. It's a decent song, but I don't think the "lazy" sound and feel of the song fit either Craig or the album that good. And when Trapper Avenue reminds me of the Van Morrison I love, Christine reminds me of the Van Morrison I really can't stand. The crooning, laidback and jazzy version of him.
But this is a remarkable even and solid album. I dig CFHE, but this is way more consistent, both in sound and style, and when it comes to the quality of the songs.

Loving the album. Cannot get enough of it. The only song that didn't hit me straight away is Roman Guitars but it has grown on me. Favourite tune is probably Trapper Avenue which is just beautiful in my opinion ("singing songs we both like" kills me, almost). I too have found myself getting pretty emotional during 'Maggie...'- since i finally "heard" it and the lyrics hit home it really chokes me up. And 'Sarah Calling From A Hotel' gave me goosebumps the first time i heard it and ever since. Maybe one of my favourite CF lyrics and the bridge is just brilliant. What a fantastic treat this album is.

Initially Roman Guitars was my favourite and Newmyer's Roof is still fantastic but a month on it's Sandra From Scranton. A latter-day Lord I'm Discouraged if you will... "She's got medical reasons For all these prescriptions I suppose that's enough explanation I ask what she's up to She just looked at the floor..." Fantastic! I'm struggling for a least favourite. Maybe I Was Doing Fine but that's splitting hairs. I loved Clear Heart Full Eyes but this album is a step up and then some.

I honestly can't think of a song I'd call my least favorite. Every song is great. Right now my favorite is "I was doing fine..." A few of the lyrics just wreck me.
