There was no doubt in my mind; I did it. I did it, and I'm gonna do it again. As much as I loved CHFE, this is exactly what I want from a Craig Finn solo album.

Whoa, Roman Guitars is something different. It reminds me of a Mountain Goats song.

I've been listening all week. Love it. Like with CHFE, I think his solo records are some of his strongest lyrics in a long time. That said, musically this one is a huge step up. I haven't been able to wrap my head around "Roman Guitars" quite yet, but the rest of the record makes me very happy.

I loooooved CHFE. It came along at a very important time in my life and will always be inextricably linked to that period of my life, which I consider a huge positive.
With the caveat that I'm listening to this at work through tinny PC monitor speakers, and that obviously I'm posting on this board so my feelings about Craig are pretty transparent, but... I think this might be a masterpiece. Every song has been "oh this one's the best, right here". Going to a Show was my favorite, but then Saint Peter Upside Down came along, then Trapper Avenue threw me around... for reference, for whatever positive I felt, I did not have this feeling when I first heard HIW and Teeth Dreams.

I've given it three spins, definitely agree with bobsacamano in that as the album goes along I keep thinking each song is my new favorite.
It's hard for me to compare Craig's albums to THS, they're just so different in their intention but I think this is a great step forward from CHFE sonically.

I'm curious as to how involved Craig was with this album musically. I could be wrong but some of the acoustic guitar does not sound like it's played by Craig, based on some of his solo performances. Still, I think this is a triumph of a record and waaaaay above CHFE. I looooove 'Sarah, Calling From A Hotel'. I kinda prefer the original live version of 'Going To A Show' though, even if it seemed a little unstructured.

Just one man's opinion, but this record beats the shit out of CHFE. Crucify me if you must.

For what it is worth, in the album credits it is listed as: Craig Finn: Vocals, Guitars Josh Kaufman: Guitars, Bass, Piano, Keys, Vocals Josh Kaufman is the producer of the album also.

Just listened once.
I'm blown away with how good FITF is.
This record is just beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
Damn, I feel quite emotional!

I wasn't the biggest fan of CHFE. I thought there were some really good songs on there (Rented Room, New Friend Jesus, When No One's Watching), but that sonically, they had not been developed to their fullest potential. It sounded like exactly what it was - a group of guys that had never met before and recorded an album rapidly with a lot of live takes in a short period of time. This made for a very loose and spontaneous sounding record, but I always felt a lot of the songs were undercooked and could have been made more powerful and nuanced if they had been given more time to marinate and grow.
This record feels totally different to me. I noticed the difference when I heard Newmyer's Roof and Maggie - there were more textures, a bigger variety of sounds, and more attention to detail. The songs resonated with me in a much stronger way. After one listen, I think rest of the record has that potential as well. Excited to live with this for a while and really dig into the soundscapes.

I'm pretty much going to echo everyone else here. I liked CHFE but didn't revisit it often. I'm already really digging this album. With Craig's vocals and lyrics, it's familiar and comfortable but it's also definitely different. Like catching up with a friend you haven't seen in many years. This is going to be played frequently over here.

"Christine" or "I Was Doing Fine"? I'm pretty in love with "I Was Doing Fine...." It's my favourite too. I do agree (with previous posters) that this record has much more going on sonically / musically than CHFE, and that it probably is a better record all round. However, I still feel that CHFE has a couple of the best lines that Craig has written (in Jackson and Not Much Left of Us). Also, the sound of the songs on CHFE was a lot fuller if you saw CF perform them live.

I'm not sure if it's the intended reaction, but I burst out laughing the first time I heard the "some nights I try to see Jesus; I do it by crossing my eyes" line.

Unlike many of you, I've revisited CHFE quite a lot in the past couple of years. It still feels a bit underdeveloped, like there's a channel dropping out or a guitar missing in the mix. While it certainly could have been better, it also gave the album a feeling I've rarely heard in any other record. I think it's quite nice, and I've enjoyed it on my way to work as a nice change from bootlegs or Teeth Dreams.
The one, though. This feels like something entierly different - in the best way possible. Rich and full arrangements, pretty sweet production (allthough I've heard it through earbuds via my laptop) and some really well written songs. It just sounds like a proper album with a feeling and a vision. It might not mean much to say this after one single listen, but my gut tells me that this is going to be an album who sticks with me. Can't wait to get to know each song better.
