It's much less eloquent than a lot of the suggestions above, but "The girls want to go to the party/But no one's in any shape to drive" to me contains all the fundamental elements of the Hold Steady universe.

This kinda sums it up to me... "We're good guys but we can't be good every night. We're good guys but we can't be good our whole lives. We're good guys but we can't be good every night. Father I have sinned. And I want to do it all again tonight."

From the same song, I kind of prefer:
Tonight we're gonna have a really good time But I wanna go to heaven on the day I die Gonna make like a preemptive strike Hit the 5:30 mass on a Saturday night
Is there a particular reason why they basically never play "Our Whole Lives" live? It's probably my favorite track off that album, but I never see it in setlists...

All good answers but you're thinking too hard.

'...because we can't get as high as we got on that first night'
It's so true, as amazing as anything is, it's never as good as the first time. It's all about the youth, the past, the memories...they're all the best memories we have, but they'll never be as good as the time we first made those memories.

My current favourite lyric is: Saturday night was a runway that extended into Sunday And sometimes Monday

My current favourite lyric is: Saturday night was a runway that extended into Sunday And sometimes Monday That's a great line. One of the best. Frank Turner has a similar thing going on in The Real Damage. A great move from "the last day of the week" to "the first day of the week".

I keep going back to "I don't think we'll get the truth from kids with stickers on their boots." From Two-Handed Handshake

Favorite lyric (of all time, might I add): "And we hope/As we hang from the limbs of the trees/We cling to the rails of the boats/The mountains all covered in oaks" Favorite line (other than the aforementioned ones): "There is a part of this city I didn't want you to see" and leading on to the chorus. Most Hold Steady-esque line: "Charlemagne's got something in his sweatpants"

Actually, thinking about it, the prototypical Craig Finn/Hold Steady line must be, "I think I might have mentioned that before!"

From the same song, I kind of prefer: Tonight we're gonna have a really good time But I wanna go to heaven on the day I die I was going to choose this but you beat me to it! Seems to inform pretty much most of the stuff that happens in THS songs.

Either
"She said "there's gonna come a time where I'm gonna have to go with whoever's gonna get me the highest""
Or
"You're a beautiful girl, and you're a pretty good waitress... But Jessie, I don't think I'm the guy."
Or
"What the hell, I'll tell my story again..."
Or
"You can hang in the kitchen, talk about stars and the upcoming sequel"
Or
"We drink and we dry up and now we crumble into dust, we get wet and we corrode and now we're covered up in rust"
