"It's my party and I'll die if I want to"
Party and death, embodied in a smart and slightly rewritten cultural reference.
I'm sure there are other lines who catches the joy, the melancholy and the magnificent storyline(s) in a better way, but that line is to me the closest to what a machine set to calculate the most typical Hold Steady line would come up with.

Mmmm. There's a few that always come to mind: "You came into the ER drinking gin from a jam jar/And the nurse is making jokes about the ER being like an after bar" has always summed them up pretty well for me. Also: "She was limping left on broken heels when she said Father, can I tell your congregation how a resurrection really feels?", and "She said the theme of this party's the industrial age/You came in dressed like a train wreck."
But at the end of the day, for me, THE WINNER IS ::drum roll::
"Killer parties almost killed me."
I don't understand how it could be anything else.

I will say the defining Craig moment for me is during the bridge of Knuckles:
I've been trying to get people to call me Sunny D Cause I got the good stuff the kids go for But people keep calling me Five Alive Cause the last guy didn't really die, I just lied And the first four didn't really die, I just lied
While the lyrics by themselves (though awesome) might not stand out as "definitive", it's the delivery that does it for me.

"Killer parties almost killed me." I don't understand how it could be anything else. That's definitely up there. As for some of the other lines mentioned, I agree: They are very, very Hold Steady. But they are also lines in plural. I'm looking for that one single line. As "Killer parties almost killed me". If not, I think a few lines from Arms & Hearts is pretty spot as well. "Arms and hearts and alcohol and death/ she was awkward and thoughful, descending into heaven dripping wet" manages to combine alcohol, religion, death and sex in a pretty perfect manner.

Okay...
Favorite line:
"You say you're a princess, but I remain convinced; I've seen the guys that you've been with, and they don't seem much like princes."
Most Hold Steady-esque line:
"Lost in fog and love and faithless fear, I've had kisses that make Judas seem sincere."

Or, even more compact and from the same song:
Man, we make our own movies

Good question. I guess it depends how you define most Hold Steady-esque line. As far as a line that most sums up the band, I'd have to go with:: "We are our only saviors." So much sadness and joy, fear and hope all in five words.
As far as a line that couldn't possible be written by any other band, then it'd have to be "killer parties almost killed me."

"Half naked and three quarters wasted"
"They started kissing when the nurses took off their IVs It was kinda sexy, but it was kinda creepy Their mouths were fizzy with the cherry cola They had the privacy of bedsheets And all the other kids were mostly in comas"

Off the new record, I'm kind of fond of "I know I made them a promise, but those are just words, and words can get weird."
Off older records, probably "She said 'You're pretty good with words, but words won't save your life,' and they didn't, so he died."
(There may be a theme here that may or may not relate to the fact that I spend a lot of my time writing books and blog posts...)
