Thursday night. Gonna stay out all night. It's gonna be all right. You're coming, right? Right? Of course you are. If you find me, I'll even give you the "high five" speech. See you at the Waiting Room.

Wish I could make it. I've had a blast at the previous Waiting Room shows. Have a great time!

Wait, did this actually happen?
Because, really, if you try to put it all down, it sounds like fiction. Shows like that don't happen in real life... in Omaha.
My wife and I met up with Brendan and, after a bite to eat, were introduced to Chris, Altman, and Stephanie, who had just received a haircut from Mr. Tad Kubler. It should be noted that TK did a fine job, indeed, and continues to impress with his arsenal of talents.
(By the way: as Brendan pointed out, it'd been six years since the two of us had been in the same room at the same time. That's far too long.)
After staking out spots at the front (remember, I was with Brendan), we met several new friends and were treated shortly to the Josh Berwanger Band, a group from just outside of Lawrence, KS, who played a fast, punchy set and are well worth catching, should they turn up near you. Their set marks the only time I've ever seen anybody actually play a Gibson Moderne, to boot.
Soon enough, the lights dimmed, the Lou Reed played, and things got a little nuts, as that setlist attests. The band was in fine form and, for however good you think that setlist looks, it sounded better. There were songs in the setlist that I've seen live numerous times in the past eight years (this was show number 11 for me), and they sounded every bit as vital and fresh as you could want.
The addition of "Stevie Nix" was last minute- it was originally going to be "Charlemagne in Sweatpants." At some point, a pink Stevie Nicks tee shirt was placed on one of TK's amps and, mid-encore, the shirt was held up like a battle flag. This was the second alteration of the night- "Sequestered in Memphis" replaced a scratched-out "Hurricane J" earlier in the set- and was the biggest surprise to those of us close enough to see the setlist.
There's something unreal about having the singer in your favorite band look right at you as he belts "Lord, to be 33 forever" as your 33rd year comes to a close. I can't really articulate it, but it was really something else.
So, yeah. One of the best rock shows I've ever attended, in Omaha, Nebraska, of all places. Who knew?
A correction to something CF noted on stage, at Brendan's suggestion: I haven't hit tweet #52,000 yet. It really WAS Brendan's 64th show, though.
Oh, and, if you're going to any of the shows, go to the merch table and talk to Josh. He's the real thing, and it was AWESOME seeing him take the mic during the "Stay Positive" bridge, even if the mic cut out. Super nice, super rad guy.

Also: nice little Q&A with Craig from the Omaha World-Herald. Read it right here.

but OAKS! tell us about Oaks! We knew it was coming, and it still hit like a truck. There's a little video- I think you can find it through the Unified Scene social media accounts- but even that doesn't do it justice. It's stately and powerful, and I'm still processing it all. As it ended and the band left for the encore break, it felt like flipping over a record, and the encore felt all the more celebratory after it.

Geez, for as good a time as I had at the Stone Pony and the Paramount, it seems like the set lists just keep getting better. It kills me that I'm not going to be around for the Seattle and Vancouver shows. This may call for a quick trip down to Vegas for the Aug 2 show.

but OAKS! tell us about Oaks! They did it for soundcheck, too, and hearing the band creep into it in an almost empty room was one of those moments during which it very slowly dawns on you just how amazing being in that moment really is. But, getting pressed against the stage by a room full of strangers during "I swear I feel each little sway" is pretty fucking great, too. And, yes, to whoever threw that Stevie Nicks shirt: I, also, am forever in your debt.
