The Hold Steady almost have enough albums under their belt now to warrant a compilation...Bit of a pointless exercise, but what do you think it should look like? Say 15 tracks max, has to be sequenced as an album.
1. The Swish 2. Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night 3. Stuck Between Stations 4. Most People are DJs 5. Your Little Hoodrat Friend 6. First Night 7. Constructive Summer 8. Chips Ahoy 9. Sequestered in Memphis 10. We Can Get Together 11. Banging Camp 12. Stay Positive 13. The Weekenders 14. You Can Make Him Like You 15. Killer Parties
Pains me leave off Sweet Part, Slapped Actress and Stevie Nix...

I'll self-impose a rule of 3 from every record.
1 Positive Jam 2 The Swish 3 Killer Parties 4 Cattle & The Creeping Things 5 Your Little Hoodrat Friend 6 Multitude of Casualties 7 Stuck Between Stations 8 Chips Ahoy! 9 First Night 10 Constructive Summer 11 Sequestered In Memphis 12 Lord, I'm Discouraged 13 The Weekenders 14 Hurricane J 15 A Slight Discomfort

Okay, here we go...
01. Positive Jam 02. Massive Nights 03. Stevie Nix 04. First Night 05. Constructive Summer 06. Chips Ahoy! 07. Citrus 08. The Swish 09. How a Resurrection Really Feels 10. We Can Get Together 11. Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night 12. Multitude of Casualties 13. Sequestered In Memphis 14. A Slight Discomfort 15. Killer Parties
Oh man, that was harder than I thought. Kinda tried not to have too many tracks from the same albums. Honorable mentions: Cattle Slapped Actress Yeah Sapphire Stations Girls Like Status Banging Camp Yr Little Hoodrat Friend Sweet Payne Sweet Part of the City Knuckles Party Pit Ask Her For Aderall Hostile, Mass.
You know what, f**k it. A "Best of The Hold Steady" compilation would have every single one of their tracks on it.
... except for Soft in the Center.

Stations Adderall The Swish You Gotta Dance Massive Nights Rock Problems Don't Let Me Explode Discouraged Stay Positive Girls Like Status Spectres Hoodrat Sweatpants Smidge Most People are DJ's Killer Parties

I'd much prefer a B-sides and rarities and imports comp. There is certainly enough to make an entire albums worth there. I hope it is just a matter of time before we see one.
I couldn't even begin to make a track list for a greatest hits. It would vary from day to day!

I agree - a b sides / rarities official release would be killer - especially as some of the tracks are excellent. Hopefully it's something they can get done at some point

B-SIDES PLEASE!
Anyway I think for a greatest hits it should be like an introduction to the band, for those who aren't already familiar. So it's not a matter of what my favourite songs are, rather, the essential songs you need to hear to understand THS...
1. Sweet Part of the City 2. The Swish 3. Your Little Hoodrat Friend 4. Chips Ahoy! 5. Stay Positive 6. Hurricane J 7. Stuck Between Stations 8. Spinners 9. Sequestered in Memphis 10. Killer Parties Hidden Bonus Track: Milkcrate Mosh.

Constructive Summer 2. Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night 3. Hurricane J 4. First Night 5. Barfruit Blues 6. Cattle & the Creeping Things 7. Massive Nights 8. Stuck Between Stations 9. Stay Positive 10. Killer Parties A best of B-sides/Rarities album would be so damn cool. Perhaps something like this, assuming they were all recorded: 1. You Gotta Dance (With Who You Came To the Dance With) 2. Spectres 3. Girls Like Status 4. Milkcrate Mosh 5. Look Alive 6. 212 Margarita 7. Ask Her For Aderall 8. Modesto's Not That Sweet 9. Criminal Fingers 10. Two-Handed Handshake

In regards to the b-sides comp, I've never hear anyone give any love to "Just Saying", the song THS did on the soundtrack to that really awful Kevin James film (I think it was called The Dilemma). As a matter of fact, I have never even heard that song mentioned on the boards at all. It is a really badass song too. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ex-wqzLVevQ

I'll use 3 from every album and a b-side here and there and let personal preference bleed into it a bit.
1. the swish 2. stuck between stations 3. cattle and the creeping things 4. 40 bucks 5. constructive summer 6. the weekenders 7. most people are djs 8. chips ahoy 9. Stevie Nix 10. you gotta dance.... 11. stay positive 12. our whole lives 13. yeah sapphire 14. spinners 15. we can get together 16. southtown girls 17. how a resurection really feels 18. killer parties
I know it might be early to put spinners on there but I'm going on the fact that I love the song over the fact that its new. Also the exclusion of Your little hoodrat friend is purely based on my preference of the other three songs off of seperation sunday.

A few weeks ago when activity on the boards started to increase Tad made a post in some thread saying that email questions to the band (and then gave an email address) and said they would try to answer them. I figured he meant we would maybe make his own thread and post answers. I emailed and asked about the b-sides/rarities comp and if that was something they were considering. I guess you wouldn't want to release something like that too close to a new album but it is basically my most anticipated record as of right now, even though it hasn't been announced and may never be announced.

01. Positive Jam 02. The Swish 03. Hornets 04. Hoodrat 05. Stevie Nix 06. Stuck Between Stations 07. Chips Ahoy! 08. Party Pit 09. Girls Like Status 10. Constructive Summer 11. Yeah Sapphire 12. Sweet Part Of The City 13. Rock Problems 14. Our Whole Lives 15. Killer Parties
Also, a b-sides/rarities compilation is something I long for. A decent alternative would be 2LP reissues of every album, complete with every lost track who belongs to them.

i feel like, at this point, they could probably do a b-sides/outtakes/rarities box set. Yep. I reckon they could easily pack out a 4-LP box set. There must be at least 20 studio-recorded tracks that don't need any changing, I don't think I'd like it so much if they re-recorded the rarities without keys etc.
