That gave me a chuck.

Wow! What a find.
Reading the track by track comments by Tad and Craig, it's hard not to see the tension between them. I guess ten years in buses and hotels will do that to you.

So 'Teeth Dreams' is a direct Infinite Jest reference. Neat. It was the first thing that popped into my head when I read the album title for the first time.

'directly inspired by' and 'direct reference' are very different, I think.
like a direct reference would be a direct quote or reuse of a relatively complex thought/image (something unique to the source).
'teeth dreams' is a very common phrase that's been in use many times, and craig was inspired by someone else's use of it and reused it. this isn't quite the same thing as like... name-checking david foster wallace in the way he name-checks joe strummer or something.

Fair enough. Don't think my forum posts through as much as I probably should. Maybe I just want to see a direct reference in one of the songs to Infinite Jest as Craig's mentioned Wallace and that book in particular several times in interviews (and I'm obviously really into the book+THS). But hey, I'll take name-checks of Nelson Algren and John Cassavetes.

Craig has mentioned anxiety as being a big theme with this album, specifically how the gap between how present ourselves in social media and our actual selves causes us anxiety (I think I got that about right). I was listening to Spectres today and noticed these lyrics:
"Maybe our anxiety lives in the spaces in between who we really are and what we want to be and the things that we let other people see when all we really want is to be in magazines"
Oh dammit Craig, you b-side foreshadowing wizard.

The lyrics to Oaks already give me chills. This!! Just finished my first listen through, and was reading this while listening to Oaks.... "I can honestly say, there was a period of about two years where I believed this would be the last record Craig and I would make together. And I wanted to have a track ready to close out the album that would sound like things weren't ever going to be the same. I worked on the demo for about a year before I handed it off to Finn. When he heard it, he mentioned that it gave him a real seasick feeling. Bobby helps to anchor that a bit and when Finn finally wrote lyrics for it this past summer, the whole thing came together far better than I could have expected. The last chorus, before the outro when Finn sings "Call for a taxi, climb into the backseat…" the first time he sang it, the fucking hair on my arms stood up and it felt like somebody just walked over my grave. I was like, "Holy shit. This really sounds like this is the last time I'm seeing somebody…" Anyone who has a long, sordid history with drugs knows there are times when you would say goodbye to somebody, and as they turned to walk away, you know it's going be the last time you ever see them alive. And that last chorus feels like that - waiting for that phone call. And then the whole thing shifts again with "...and we dream." " ...And the weight of Tads words and the thought of a world with no Hold Steady, whilst reminiscing about all of the shows, and the life moments that were sound tracked by the band, set to Craigs lyrics had me properly tearing up. Man, how fucking lucky are we to have lived through this? If Id been born 50 years from now and found this amazing band, Id be jealous as fuck of people like us. Drink these upcoming gigs in people, you never know when itll be your last.
