Steve Selvidge (@steveselvidge) just posted this on instagram: "The demos are demoed, the prepro is preproed, the meetings have met. The new Hold Steady record starts TODAY!" I, for one, am ecstatic. http://instagram.com/p/b1goAGCxcv

I must add also, the location tag is Dark Horse Recording, Nashville. John Agnello isn't involved though unfortunately. For those who are interested..

I think you will be happy with the producer.

I think you will be happy with the producer. According to Steve's twitter, Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Rush, Marilyn Manson, Evanescence) is producing the new record.

I will be happy when it gets here. Somehow I think they missed the brass ring, and will forever be this niche "cool" band. I think a lot of people felt that Stay Posi should have been their breakout album, while I think it was BAGIA. The first three albums are in a class with first album releases by bands like Bruce Springsteen (Greetings, WIESS, Born to Run) The Clash (The Clash, Give em enough Rope, London Calling) Creedence (Crredence, Bayou Country, Green River). Stay Posi was a different kind of album but I still think it contains some great stuff. I do not know how or why the excitement waned but it did. The buzz seemed to be low and muffled. After HIW I am not sure what to expect. I havent seen the band in over a year, maybe two. Did not want to see them in an opening spot, so I have passed on the Jersey and NYC dates. Despite what everyone says about bands sounds evolving etc....I MISS that fucking piano....it just gave the music space. I sure do wish them the best of luck on this new release. I think Finn is the best songwriter around these days. No one else is close and Clear Heart was an incredible journey. Looking forward to more of that.

I think it's important not to confuse the 'buzz' factor with popularity. Remember that HiW is THS' highest charting record to date and seemed to expand their popularity to bigger levels in the states and abroad, even though it's probably the least embraced album amongst us all. Five albums in, it's natural for the buzz to go away since the band isn't new anymore.

Not sure about the "abroad" part of "seemed to expand their popularity to bigger levels in the states and abroad". Post HIW I've seen the band play smaller and smaller venues in Europe and Canada - place where I've wondered what such a great band is doing playing there.
As regards live popularity, it was definitely as its peak just after Stay Positive. I can't speak for the USA on that though as I don't go to gigs there.
The new album is definitely crunch time. I think we can forget a popularity breakthrough now, but I just have a feeling this album will be make or break for the band itself.
I'm actually really concerned, as the new songs I've heard so far have not impressed. In my view, not one would have made it onto AKM, SS, BGIA, or SP not even as bonus/extra tracks. Having said that, they may well improve considerably in a studio environment, especially if they can find room for some keys here and there.
My fingers have never been more crossed that I'm totally wrong on the above, and the new album will be epic!

As someone who listens primarily for lyrics, I typically experience very little fluctuation in quality between albums. Sure, some are better than others (even much better than others), but if someone's a 'great' lyricist, I can reasonably expect everything they put out to be at least 'good.'
Craig Finn is my favorite lyricist, so I already know this album will meet my criteria (because literally nothing he's ever done hasn't met my criteria, except maybe the first lifter puller album, but I can forgive that and appreciate the angst).
For this reason, I'm incredibly excited.

I thought the Winter '11 Great Britain run saw the guys playing at 1,000 seater minimums each night... could be wrong...

To me going from playing the Beacon Theatre as a headliner to warming up the Gaslight Anthem on Pier 26 is sort of a reversal. I'll prolly take shit for that, but its how I feel. Had they been headlining at The Pony, I am there...as a warm up band, no thanks.

I would guess that these festival/opener shows are merely "hold-the-fort" money-stabilizing gigs until the big LP6 tour begins once the record is finished... not sure it's fair to compare them to the HiW headlining shows.

After reading the producer's credits, i'm even more curious to hear the album. He's worked with a lot of really good metal acts.

His favorite album is Ratt's "Out of the Cellar". I wonder how Craig will look with big hair?

I've got one word for this thread: BAH - HUMBUG! It's new tunes, yo. Stop complaining. +1. I would also remind folks how "meh" some of the HiW tracks sounded live before we heard the studio versions (see: Our Whole Lives, A Slight Discomfort). We need to let the boys do what they do!!! With a kickass rock producer and Tad at the helm...

I love the new songs I've heard. I really doubt THS will make a record that sounds like butt metal. (Obv not song-wise, but production either). It just would've been cooler to hear they went with a producer who's worked on records I actually like

I've got one word for this thread: BAH - HUMBUG! It's new tunes, yo. Stop complaining. Let me just say, I love this band. There was no complaining. I miss the hell out of em. Whats worse is I actually SEE them...in real life all the time. I am pumped for anything new. To give you an idea my Two Favorite songs off of HIW were probably The Weekenders and Sweet Part of the City...love Sweet. Its a perfect song, best on the album.

Personal opinion, I'd quite like to hear some heavy rock production. I know it won't happen. Just saying, I would not complain if it did.

Really, as long as the guitars don't have that Evanescence tone, it'll be ok

I just looked at that Wikipedia page. I'm impressed. I guess it wouldn't be to everyone's taste on here, but I think the production on Ghost's Infestissumam is amazing.

If you listen through some of the records he has produced and mixed, there's actually a lot of variability in terms of guitar sounds. I think a good reference would be the couple of Foo Fighters records he produced (One By One and In Your Honor). While lacking in good songs (IMO), they both have really nice, full, warm, loud guitar sounds that put, say, HiW's crunchy, processed guitars to shame.
I highly doubt Tad and Steve will go full-fledged metal on us... though Tad always seems to mention Mastadon as a favorite band in interviews... hmm...
