This is great! They might become as big as The Lumineers!

Odd. The commercial I mean.
I completely understand THS pocketing the cash from this - it's the ad itself I don't get.
Mentions something happening this summer, but missed opportunity to roll the lyrics! Just some chords, could be anyone. Ah well.
I'm just grumpy because Glasto's been shite.

This has to be a dream situation for a band during an off-album year... between this and Game of Thrones they've probably been pocketing some nice change. I'm all for the guys doing this sort of thing; hell, it's not like they're endorsing Depends or something.
This brings up an interesting discussion. THS' deal with Vagrant is up, as Tad pointed out in a recent interview:
“Our last record was our last record with Vagrant so we need to figure out, are we going to do some more records with them? We have a lot of options right now as to how we want to approach the next record and were in the process of figuring that out.”
My ultimate question is whether or not THS has attracted the interest of major labels, or if they'll re-sign with Vagrant or another indie label for the next record. They certainly have built up a solid fan base that always attends shows, and on the last tour they were starting to sell out 3-5K theaters with relative ease. They are also critics' darlings, have back-to-back top 40 albums, and are now enjoying an increase in mainstream marketability this year.

Lots of bands at THS' level are self-releasing these days. Dawes and Jason Isbell are two good examples. I'd be surprised if that isn't the next step.

i doubt there's much difference between vagrant and a major. i wouldn't be surprised if they self release at all.

Could someone please explain to me the wider ramifications of the label situation? I'm not sure where it makes much of a difference, but I'm sure that's mostly due to my ignorance.

The more I'm thinking about this, the less it might matter in today's music world. Surely, bands on major labels do enjoy benefits of product placement and marketing. But it seems like THS is having no trouble at all with this - nor are other indie bands at their level (The National (Game of Thrones), Grizzly Bear (iTunes), Spoon (countless movies and car commercials), etc).
