I declare July 28 "Craig Finn Appreciation Day" in honor of this debacle. Seconded. I mean, almost every day is Crag Finn appreciation day, but having a holiday for it is a good reminder.

Hey all, been following the forum for a while, but just joined. Hold Steady is one of the top 2 bands I listen to. The other? Gaslight Anthem. (Got to see them both in Asbury Park in May -- it was freezing but oh so awesome, even if I did miss the first half of THS because somebody in our group was running late).
Brian Fallon, up until 2012, was one of my favorite band personalities. Such a down to earth, cool guy. His behavior since then has been really uncharacteristic. Over the past year or so, a lot of TGA fans have been in agreement with all the comments I see here about him. Frankly, he's been kind of a dick.
He's also gotten a lot of backlash from even the most dedicated of fans about his behavior, especially recently regarding the Tumblr post itself. Even though I've been a pretty big critic of his, I'd also be remiss if I didn't say to not write them off just yet. Brian's acted really strange over the past year, but I think he's heard what many people have had to say loud and clear.
I also speculate that there might be personal stresses outside the band that may be impacting his behavior. I don't know him personally, just a feeling I get. Sometimes he's still super cool and sometimes he's pissy; that speaks more to daily stress than an overall change in personality. This doesn't excuse anything he's done, but I think through their next tour and album you'll see a more familiar Brian Fallon (the guy the fans actually admired).
Also, for the record, to the person who said the Gaslight guys always seemed douchey, I understand how somebody would get that vibe. Between my friends and I, we've had the opportunity to talk to them a handful of times, and they've always been super-nice and grateful (even recently).

Do you think the boys were pissed when their fans broke into an impromptu dance & sing-a-long way back in 2009? Not

Do you think the boys were pissed when their fans broke into an impromptu dance & sing-a-long way back in 2009? Not That Williamsburg show was so much fun. As I remember it, at first nobody left because we were shouting for THS to come back for more. Segued into a 200-person singalong. By the time the Rosalita dance party kicked into high gear, the guys were watching from the balcony and at least one was snapping photos of the crowd. Craig and Franz were laughing. They came back on stage to cheers, explained that they still couldn't play another song, and shook hands for a few minutes. I proclaimed something incoherent and slap-happy to Tad. So much joy.

That clip is just beautiful. I can't stop grinning! So much joy.
You just wouldn't get that with any other band.

Not to beat this dead horse further, but Fallon set himself up for the "BROOOOOOCE" cheers. He says, "Maybe you'd like to do Bon Jovi's "Livin' On A Prayer" (Long Pause) OR?". Everybody in the crowd thought the same thing. And the line "That was MY awesome thing, not yours". You can't up the douche-ometer any higher than that, can you?
And so his punishment to us for not fulfilling his singalong wishes? Playing Gaslight Anthem songs!!
It was a blissful evening, the rain was not unpleasant, THS was smoking, and TGA was fun too, and obviously the crowd was digging it. UNTIL. I guess sometimes there is SO LITTLE JOY for poor Brian.
