I've felt the same about the production, it just never grabbed me. I'm pretty excited about the switch back to the brilliant John Agnello (BAGIA, SP, Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile). He's pretty excited about it too! Has that been confirmed anywhere? This is the first I've heard that he's producing the new record...

I'm pretty sure he tweeted something about recording overdubs with THS, but that was months ago. I think he's producing Okkervil River at the moment. If THS are still recording, I doubt they'd be doing it with John.

I was never a big fan of his production anyway. I think AKM and SS sound best by far, but unfortunately that didn't carry to HIW. I had high hopes

JA was on about it on fuzzbook ages ago so he must have done some recording. more recently someone tweeted a photo of Dave Gardner in the studio.

I want to say that HiW is my least favorite of the THS albums but I don't think I've listened to any THS album more. Im not fond of a few cuts but "A Slight Discomfort" might just be the best song they've ever written. I just wish they would play it live more often. The other stuff ranges from essential (Weekenders) to filler (Soft in the Center). That piano in "Our Whole Lives" drives me nuts. I think the record perfectly reflects the transition the band was going through at the time. If anything, it sounded like they needed to take a long break before the next one to figure out what the sound was going to be going forward.
I saw them too many times during the cycle, starting I think at that weird venue in Ardsley (was RSD before that?) and wrapping up at the Beacon. I took a break until NYE in Montclair, with the exception of Craig's show in Hoboken.

I think I was a smidge* too hard on HiW when I last posted in this thread. I listened again recently and while it suffers from comparisons to AKM or SS, there's a lot more to love about it than I remembered. Some of the straight ahead rock riffs are belters and, yeah, A Slight Discomfort is mighty.
*this is a funny reference to the song The Smidge, which is on Heaven is Whenever.

I have one way I judge an album...how often do I go back to it. HIW....not so much. Its like a bad Springsteen album. Its not really that bad, but you just know it could be better. I know people (and bands) are gonna change, but that doesn't mean you have to like them cause you used to.

It's amazing how it took me almost 3 years to realize how fucking awesome The Smidge is... especially the bridge, which is so money it's insane.

I'd like to add Navy Sheets bridge. That guitar tone is so sweet.
