I know, I know. You think it only benefits ebay scammers. could be. But there are actually a few things on here that I want this year: www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialReleasesI'm trying to narrow it down to 2-3. Thoughts?

There is a lot of music I'd like to have. But I don't use vinyl. And I don't have an indie store. And yes, ultra limited releases piss me off. I don't mind special color or whatever, but special tracks? Not so fun.

I'd like to hear Afrika Bambaata have a crack at Kick Out The Jams; the Devo live album; the Mastodon split singles would be nice to have; the Pelican and Mclusky albums are definitely worth getting if you don't already have them in one format or another. Those Rough Guides look pretty interesting too.
If I get the day off work and aren't broke, the only things I'll definitely try to get are the Atmosphere/The Uncluded split LP and the Lee Hazlewood compilation.

there are a few things i'll buy if i see them, but the only things i think i NEED are the lemuria 7" (which isnt listed for some odd reason), the danny brown 2xLP, and the odd future record (which also isn't listed)
and yes, anyone who doesn't have that mclusky LP should absolutely jump on it

I know, I know. You think it only benefits ebay scammers. I thought the preferred term was flogger? Why is it a scam to try and make a buck? Nobody makes you bid on the stuff.

maybe this is naive and overly idealistic, but i'd like to think those of us involved in punk/hc/indie rock should be above that. maybe we should treat great music as something more than an avenue to a quick buck.
thankfully, almost every "limited" RSD release comes out normally a few weeks later anyway. or goes back down to reasonable prices within a month or 2 on ebay.

I agree with you for the most part. I just don't think selling something for a profit is scamming.

honestly, the stores that mark things up like crazy and/or sell to the highest bidder that day bother me more than ebay sellers

Is it weird that absolutely nothing on that list looks good to me?

i'm hearing that the OF Tape is just coming out on RSD, but not limited or anything. i like that. Yeah, that's pretty awesome. Though I might just get it on CD instead (which is already out). I read on one website that they'd be selling it for like $27.99. That's about 8 dollars more than I wanted to spend on it.

that is one sweet little video and patterson is v eloquent.
When HIW came out on RSD 2 years ago, I was queing at 7am (shop opened at 9.30) in leeds and was third in queue (the shop told me the day before they had 3 of the clear vinyls). Shop opened and I had intended to buy 2 copies, one for and another for a dear friend who loves the band.
Whilst waiting, I spoke to a yong girl of about 15 who told me she had got up at 4 am and hitch hiked from scarbrough (about a 3 hour journey) to Leeds to get a clear vinyl HiW.
However, when the shop opened, the guy in front of me bought one. I then found myself in a dilemma as if I bought the last 2 copies the girl's journey would have been in vain. What would you have done ?
I bought only 1 copy and (memory fialsds me as I bought loads of stuff i had not intended), but I think I paid for the girl's copy. I subsequently gave mine to my mate.
But I don't even have a turntable anymore (must address that situation) so I hope all win.
In my humble opinion, people who scam/flog RSD merch'should perhaps think about the ethos of it all. Not preaching or anything.

I am so pumped for this. My local record store (Exile in Champaign) is having an all day event. I can only stay for a few hours, but it's still going to be awesome.

I won a local compelation giveaway for record store day. I won't be able to get any of the special stuff because I am volunteering at a stroke screening event tomorrow morning, but when I get to the Electric Fetus I'll be able to get my freebie and I'll find a few things to buy. It should be a good day.

Billy Joel "Glass house" was my purchase. Replacement for a copy I lent to someone and never got back.

Plate'o'shrimp. I got a copy of "Otis Blue" at RSD last year. It's a great album. Some of his singing is so intimate I'm almost embarrassed to listen, like I'm eavesdropping.

Record Store Day 2012 Purchases: 1. Never To Be Forgotten: The Flipside of Stax 1968-1974 (10x7" Boxset) 2. Horrible Crowes- Live Record Store Day 7" 3. Mike Watt/Chuck Dukowski- Sweet Honey Pie/My War 7" 4. Dan Melchior- Ghost in the Supermarket 12" EP 5. Mississippi John Hurt- Last Sessions LP 6. The Reatards- Teenage Hate LP 7. Karen Dalton- It's So Hard To Tell Who's Going To Love You Best LP
I also lined up 2 and a half hours early two years ago to get my version of HiW. That's what got me to go to RSD in the first place. Since then though, it has been highly enjoyable. But yes, selling the exclusives for unreasonable prices kind of invalidates the whole concept of buying physical music because it is just too important not to. Also, people sell the damn things over the internet, not through a tangible store of any sort. Seems kind of contradictory to the whole point of RSD.
