i realized tonight that the mountain goats have about a trillion records, and i only own one of them -- the sunset tree (for reasons that are probably obvious to people that frequent the hold steady message board). i want more, but i have no idea where to go from here. for all i know, there could be some total crap albums. i hope there aren't, but you never know these days. help?

I'm don't think there's any total crap. Definitely buy tallahassee. And all hail west texas. More recent stuff is more musical, perhaps less raw. Figure out whether you like going forward or backward from Tallahassee.

I grabbed Tallahassee and Heretic Pride. i couldn't pass up a record with songs about Lovecraft, swamp people, and Michael Myers. haven't gotten to tallahassee yet

I agree with Hoodrat's idea. And don't worry about crap albums, the whole tMG discography is gold.
A little word of warning: although Get Lonely and The Life of the World to Come are both fantastic, they are definitely growers. JD keeps quiet a majority of the time on Life of the World to Come, and the whole time on Get Lonely.
Their newest album is by far my least favorite. A lot of the songs seem to lack that tMG depth.

There are some essential songs before All Hail West Texas, but from that record on it's pretty much rock solid. The rare miss is Get Lonely, which I can't stand.

Life of the World To Come piqued my interest with the bible stuff

I have much love for the Mountain Goats in general, but I love, love, love the Life of the World to Come. Part of it is the Bible theme, but it's also a really beautiful album. But, much of the Mountain Goat's material has biblical references. I agree with Amy, the best place to start is Tallahassee.

I'll disagree with everyone here. The most accessible Mountain Goats album is "We Shall All Be Healed". It's equal parts lo-fi and solid production. It sounds rough but is also put together very well. It's kinda a great way to put your feet in the water of both.

"All Hail West Texas" and "The Sunset Tree" are the two I feel that are best representative of both eras.
