anyone else get this? first listen confused me, mostly because it didn't do many of the things i expect from radiohead. the vocals aren't really the focus of any of the songs. there's no real sense of dread or tension, it's a lot calmer and more of a droning record. i'm pretty into it after a few listens. i like how it starts out sounding like scraps of music patched together, then by the end of the album it's pretty accessible. there are some incredible basslines. "codex" is beautiful. the album ends perfectly. i'm really curious to see/hear how this stuff works live.
it doesnt sound like it at all, but the record reminds me of kid a. at least in how fresh and new it seems to them. i get the feeling that this is the exact record they wanted to make, leaving behind a lot of the standard "radiohead sound" in the process

I've given the album a couple listens to so far. I definitely agree with you that the voclas aren't the focal point of this album at all, and that this is more of calmer record. There isn't really any "rockers" on this album at all with all the songs being closer to ballads. The guitars are also basically non-existent on this album. The thing that I find most interesting is the drums. Not only how they sound on the alubm which is different from how they've been before, but the rhythm and style to it. It almost seems like they're jazz beats in some of the songs.
To me this album feels like a precursor for bigger things to come. Almost like they're test driving this sound to see what people think about it before releasing something bigger and more expansive.
So far I think it's an ok album. My favorites are "Lotus Flower", "Separator", and "Codex". Those are closely followed by "Morning Mr Magpie", "Little By Little" and "Bloom". I don't think it's as good as In Rainbows, but I've only listened to it a couple times. This is Radiohead after all, so it will take a while before I really "get it".

the rhythm section is totally the focus, and i'm into it. colin greenwood's been more and more at the forefront since HTTT. now the basslines basically ARE the songs. he's a great bassist, and i'm glad they're taking advantage of that.
the last 3 songs are probably my favorites. its crazy how pretty this record is compared to everything else they've done

I don't think I'll be listening to this much as an album, but "Codex" is the jam

Superb album but this is also great - TKOL From The Basement. Basically the new album done live in a studio plus a couple of newer tracks from those sessions. Sounds really good.
