Best Non-Minneapolis THS show I've ever seen. Still not home yet but I most definitely have shit to say about this one.

Awesome show. Despite the lack of decent sightlines for the vertically challenged, The Picador is a sweet place to see THS. The atmosphere and size just feel right. The sound wasn't good but if you knew the songs (of course you did!) it didn't matter. Definitely worth the drive down from MN.

First unified scene post! Incredible show. Nothings better than the Hold Steady in a nice grimey bar. It was a sentimental replay of my first hold steady concert at the very same venue around the release of boys and girls.

to sum it up: this show is why i go out of my way to see this band as many times as i possibly can. not every night is like this one but you keep going because you MIGHT get a show like this. Iowa City kids, give yourselves a pat on the back. you rocked HAAARD like bad little Monkeys.and for the most part you rocked the right way. BIG UPS to you! you buried those private school kids from St Louis the night before. are you listening, Wash U? state school kids kicked your ass BAD! ask anyone who went to both shows. i know that's harsh but the truth often is.
rapid and random observations/recollections...
really good War On Drugs set. lots of bantering back and forth between the folks in the front and the band...great set list and much more energy than the previous night...Midnight Hauler, fuck yeah!...rivers of $2.00 Pabst in my gut and all over my body...people touchin' people that they don't even know,yo! some guy briefly caressed my ass thinking it was his dates. you made me feel like a natural woman, dude. which i hope to never feel like again,at least not at a THS show...Tad appealing to my friend early in the set to help him keep his effects pedals dry.a nice exchange of thumbs up and smiles. a perfect illustration of how much band and crowd where on the same page on this night...consumption of unnamed substances with unnamed members of unnamed bands... note to fanboys:if you want to interact with your musical mancrushes, i recommend coming armed with topics other than Why You Think They're Awesome,Man! you'd be surprised how cool dudes will be and how much time they'll give ya if you talk about baseball or guns or sushi or anything but their ART...
Brendan, emotions couldn't have been higher that night.Hope you weren't put off too much by my (totally hetero)drunken hug.frankly, if i could have i would've hugged the whole damn room. i was overcome. you are such a badass in your own Brendanly way that i had to let you know in some way other than weak platitudes on this board. ditto your female cohorts.you guys are great. let's do it again(Ithaca/Cleveland?)soonsoonsoon.
musicians constantly say that the single biggest factor in how a show is going to go is the crowd. never was this so vividly illustrated than on this night. you guys who came out for this one brought the passion and the boys gave it right back.
i have serious doubts that any show i will see this year will dethrone this one as the best show of '09. but of course i'll keep trying.
here's hoping i can make enough money this weekend to buy a plane ticket so i can make those two shows in June.

First post for a new member/longtime lurker. I graduated from Univ of Iowa and live in Chicago so it was only natural that I went back to I.C. for this show. And it did not disappoint.
This is only my fourth THS show and the first one where I was in the first couple rows. It is worth trying to get up close-- especially at a small club like The Picador. You can feel the band's energy even more, if that is possible. I'm looking forward to their next swing to Chicago/Madison/Iowa City.
