I'd love to see THS in Germany. I'm only a couple thousand frequent flyer miles away...

Kate & I are seriously contemplating it --- Koln on 3 May (a weekend break!), Groningen on 5 May...

Does this mean they will do the rest of the gigs they had planned this fall as well? Maybe not enough time, but who else than Cologne will get lucky? Please say Copenhagen. Please!

We're definitely going to Cologne. Anyone else? I definitely want to go, but I think my finances stops me from doing so. I beg and pray for them comming to Copenhagen instead. Or Gothenburg or Oslo.

Booked the train, the hotel, now just have to wait... argh... want to see them NOW. Glad we're going to this show, though, as the Groningen show --- which should be awesome --- is a 40 minute festival show. We'll go to that one, too, of course!

First things first, the set list: Hornets! Hornets! Stuck Between Stations Chips Ahoy Navy Sheets Bangin' Camp Girls Like Status Sweet Payne Hot Soft Light Constructive Summer Joke About Jamaica Magazines Southtown Girls Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night Ask Her for Adderall Lord I'm Discouraged Your Little Hoodrat Friend Stay Positive Slapped Actress Encore: First Night Sequestered in Memphis How a Resurrection Really Feels Great show, very energetic for being the first show after a transatlantic flight. Lots of smiles from Franz and Craig, even a few from Koob, who all seemed impressed with the energy level of the crowd. No "so much joy" speech, though. Shame about the drunken German futbal fans who thought that the anthemic numbers were football chants. But the rest of the crowd had a good time, and the whole thing was filmed for WDR's "Rockpalast" TV and radio show and will also be "netcast" at some point: see rockpalast.de/konzerte/2009/the_hold_steady/ for more information. When it shows up, I'll let you all know --- there will be lots of shots of Kate & I singing along at the top of our voices in our US shirts... Got to meet Felix (hi Felix!) who made it all the way from Berlin, StitchJones was there, as was the Köln/Prague/NYC/Texas massive, whom I informed about the board. Kate and I managed to talk to everyone in the band except Bobby, at least briefly. But I have to admit that it felt a bit dopey in general. Craig seemed to want to have a conversation about Groningen, but there were too many other people clamoring for attention, and so it was brief.

Yeah, as Scott said, pretty great show with a setlist muy to my gusto. I kicked it off at the brewery house Päffgen of course. Maybe a little too early because the Kölsch beers built a dangerous basis, so that the cool blonde ones, as we also call this tasty beverage in this country, at the Luxor later on really almost killed me.
Hey Scott, nice meeting you guys, please say hi to Katie. You guys are really nice folks!
I am looking forward to the Rockpalast show on TV. Luckily I didn't do push-ups on stage this time.
The band rocked hard and the boys did their job. But it was too bad that the sound could not keep up with the same level of quality.
So all in all I guess I didn't get born again. But at least I got high as hell.

But at least I got high as hell. Felix, it was a pleasure. And Kate says hi back! Hope you made it back to Berlin all safe and sound. We had a long but uneventful train ride home today to a very happy little girl and very tired-looking grandparents The sound did, well, suck. Not for lack of enthusiasm on the boys' part, though. Craig's vocals weren't nearly loud enough, and Franz's keyboard was drowned out 90% of the time, but it still rocked. I never know when I'm standing right next to the stage whether the bad sound is just from being behind the PA, but I have to say that the Dutch clubs (like Melkweg, where we saw THS in 2007, or Vera, where we go all the time) do seem to have much better sound than the Luxor did. Looking forward to tomorrow! ;D

And I bet you anything you want that I was looking more tired than your grandparents.

Sounds like lots of fun. That setlist is aces! Nice to see Hornets and Stations back in the opening spot. I really like Hornets! Hornets! in the opening spot. It's perfect for that, because to me guitar and rhythm in the beginning imply some elements of journeying or vagrancy. So I find it kind of nice when you are right at the start of your own journey at the show and The Hold Steady delivers the soundtrack to the roadmovie that is just about to start in your head. That wasn't all too clear. But I hope you still get the metaphor.
