indeed. killer. mr hoodrat and i met up with rawkguitars, brendan, and andy before the show. touched base with bloodystereos, bluegirl, and tonyrockyhorror. missed jeb somehow. nellie's was a good pregame spot. lots of space, good drink specials, decent food.
the band looked like they were having a blast up there - every single one of them. and they played a set heavy with separation sunday. cattle and the creeping things! the closer for the set was first night, which was a nice change. closer for the encore was stay positive, which i have seen as a closer a couple of times, and it is freaking great. resurrection into killer parties is still my all time favorite closing to a show, but stay positive left us all sweaty, hugged, and high fived. whoa-oh-oh-oh
bloodystereos kindly passed around some confetti. we pretty well failed to coordinate the toss; so brendan thought it was a good idea to throw a handful directly in my face. my mouth was open. *goodtimes*
the crowd was possibly the lowest energy crowd i've seen at a hold steady show in dc. that is not really a complaint in this setting though. i preferred it to my last 9:30 club THS show where I was all bruises from the neck down, with a sizeable lump on my head and a limp that lasted 3 days. i also prefer to the 930 club THS show where i was bitten. i can make my own energy or just feed off Craig's.
i confess i teared up a little at the franzlessness of the keyboard solo in stevie nix. dan does a fine job, but he's turned way, way down in the mix and hidden in the back, and that right there is a big moment for the dandy gentleman with the happy feet, live free or die belt buckle, oversized soul, and the keys turned up.
a bunch of us retired to my place after the show for more brews and snacks and frozen juiceboxes (which apparently amuses only brendan and me).
and i was in the office on time this morning. because i am that good.

That's a relief! I thought they had stopped playing First Night!

Thanks for the report, hoodrat. Different set-list in Philly last night, but very similar vibe from the show. Yes, every single one of them is having a blast up there. I'd have enjoyed it more in a more dance-friendly part of the floor, but that's my problem not the band's. Sorry I won't see you in Wilmington on Saturday.
